Beak needs a trim

Post by lyderbug » Sun Feb 08, 2009 5:41 pm

Hi peoples...

one of my societies looks like she needs a beak trim. the tips are starting to cross. i have a cuttle bone in there and i was watching her scrap at it and she appears to use just one side of her beak to scrap with. silly birdie

keeping in mind the vet i go to would only charge $15, would it be suggested that i bring her to the vet to trim it or is something i should be able to do? it's only minor at this point...should i just let her be?

if i can do it...what is the best way? can i use regular fingernail clippers?

thanks

You can use regular nail clippers but just to take a very SMALL amount off. If you take too much - it will bleed just like a nail.

You can also add a small cement perch located near the water dish so she will wipe her beak on it. I have on in each of my cages.

All of my birds nail and beak needs are satisfied by 2 perches that have crushed seashell on 100% of the perch.

One cement or crushed seashell perch should do the trick. Also, in my very limited experience, i do not think it needs to be near a water dish. Anywhere you have it, they will find it and sharpen away.

It is always good to have it near a water dish because they always wipe their beaks after drinking and that way you know they are using it.

There you have it...

I stand corrected. Put it close to water dish.
