here are a couple of pics showing what I managed to get done today. made the back wall and put it in place. then joined it to the front by adding the sides and roof beams. put in one upright support post at the end furthest from the existing aviary and put two uprights in at the near end. these two will be used for the access door. the space between the two aviaries is going to be enclosed and have two purposes, first being as a safety entrance porch while the second part will be used as a holding area for young birds.

Do you have neighbors close by and do they like birds ? I don't think you could build a aviary that large in most places unless you were in a farming type area in the states
It looks great so far

That is going to be a wonderful aviary....it is so spacious! Now once you get everything finished....where are you going to find all the finches to fill it up with.

Oh I know....you will "borrow" some from Gomer when he isn't looking.

was to lazy to change the roll of wire in the mig. all I did was increase the gas pressure to about 20 litres per minute. the gasless wire is still in the box in the shed

am still trying to work out a watering system. so many ideas but so unsure  am thinking along the lines of a large dish about an 1" deep that I can have set up so that when the level drops it replenishes itself with fresh water. it will need to be under cover so the water doesnt heat up to much during hot weather but at same time cannot be under any plants or area that has a lot of traffic.

my aim is to have a few different plants in there. 5 or 6 climbing plants of different varieties ( such as jasmine, ivy and thornless blackberry), to cover the wire that will be placed on the covered walls and back of the cage. heaps of seeding grasses. a couple of box hedge plants. a wormwood plant (herb). two geranium plants that will act as mosquito repellants ( I hope). there will be a bottlebrush tree and a grevillea in there, with these though once they are grown I have to keep the tops pruned so that the height is contollable.

For the seed grasses I would build a 2 x 6 x 1 foot deep concrete planter in the floor in the center of the aviary with no perches over head. Put a 1" lip around it, this will keep rain water from flooding the grass. Real dirt no plant food, plant their bird seed. Cover it with a clear dome till the grass gets up about 6".

The box wood can be trained like a bonsai.

You can put a drip water system in to water the plants. You can take a water fall and instead of recirculating the water let one of the drips feed it and it drain into one of the pots, or the corner of the grass planter.

Extra-large aviary

Post by aero » Wed Feb 11, 2009 5:06 am

Thats a very very big aviary. Great that you're so interested and working hard. Good luck.

Im new to owning birds, but I think waterfall type watering system willbe best for birds that would give them good water all time and still keep it clean.

Do you plan to have fern trees in there? I dont know what type, but overhere people call that Christmas Tree - so that birds can perch around easily? is that a good idea or bad one?

Good luck with building.
