Re: Owls
lovezebs they're settling in well. I am considering putting them in the f030 with some Juvenile gouldians and juvenile goldbreasts to give them a little more room to fly. These guys are quite vocal and so distinct from the other birds. I hear them earlier in the morning than the others.

They should do well with your juvies.
I hardly hear mine, with everyone else doing their thing, lol.
When I do hear them, it's a meuw-meuw sound, not at all unpleasant.
My first to sound off in the morning (when it's still dark and dreary), is my Strawberry boy, and the last to sign off at night, is my Redthroat Parrot finch boy (I swear this guy never sleeps).

Re: Owls
lovezebs good to know about the strawberry being an early bird. They are the next on my list. I've read they have a beautiful song. You're right the owls aren't loud but very distinctive. I guess it has a lot to do with how much competition they have. LOL

Re: Owls
I've read that owls are nest sleepers so I gave them an open canary nest today. I was gone for most of the day and when I got home I see they settled in.

Re: Owls
I need to finish my double aviary project before I can consider getting another pair of birds. I have been thinking of getting a pair of owls and if we hadn't gotten the pair of Goulds and the red faced parrot finches yesterday, I would be getting the owls today.

Re: Owls
lovezebs. Hi Elana. The owls are doing great. I decided to make a new flight cage to fit over my TV unit. It is 20 x 20 x 6' long. I can take them apart making two cages 20 x 20 x 36" long. I have a pair of owls and a pair of gold breasts and a pair of societies in there now. I also provided two birdbaths two seed hoppers to make sure there was no squabbling. So funny the next morning everybody was flying around like crazy completely loving it! Because all three pairs are nest sleepers I put in four different nests and within a few hours everybody had their spot. Lol. It seems to some extent the more space you provide them the more of the joy they are to watch.

You did a great job with the flight cage, Kyle.
What a wonderful idea for it to fit over the tv stand.
I just bet they love all the flying space.
I find that all these tiny guys love to fly as much as they can.
Have any of them shown any interest in doing more than just sleeping in the nests?

Chihuahua lovezebs Babs
Thanks! While far from perfect it was a labor of love. Whenever building a cage the floor is probably the hardest part to recreate. I bought 2 of the largest boot trays I could find 18 × 36 and then built the cages with them in mind. Easy to clean, easy to slide in and out. As it turns out the cost making the cages worked out to be the same as buying them. Lol.
Elana my pair of societies laid a infertile clutch. The are about two years old and have been together for a year. Like all societies I've had they seem crazy for each other. In that time they have laid three clutches all infertile. Which is a little weird since they've each had Offspring with other partners. They have been incubating the eggs for about 7 days and I candled them today. All clear eggs.
. It's okay with me if they don't produce I just feel bad for them.
Babs there has been many times and I sat down to watch TV and ended up watching the birds. LOL.
