He may have eaten the pellets too quickly, or for some reason they expanded after being eaten. A necropsy may be inconclusive.

Dayna, so sorry that you lost your owl.
I had an adult male canary aspirate while feeding chicks. He gasped for about 10 minutes before he finally died.
