Babs

No time for pants change, when you have an infant to look after, lol.

Unfortunately I won't be pipping my pants this time around. :P We got another quitter. This one had pink eyes! Not sure if that's normal... Apparently it had died of liver failure, which I suspect means I didn't keep it humid enough. Fully absorbed yolk and blood system. A lovely little bird! The liver was large, black and swollen, and there was a chlorine smell when I inspected the hatching debris despite the chick only having been dead around 6-8 hours.

BUT! Bonus:

Vilu had laid one final, sad egg around day 10 after laying the last one, and she's sitting tight! Hopefully there is no need to take over here, because while that was an incredible learning experience I am thoroughly exhausted.

The egg is fertile, and hatching day should be on the 16th-18th!
Thanks for all your help, I learned so much and had such an awesome time! I can't wait to try again after I get a proper incubator and find some button quail hatching eggs.

Well it was a wild ride. I've been through the ups and downs of finch egg hatching so much that I just grab my penlight when my adults are out around hatching time, candle them and I know who's gonna hatch, who's not and what morning to expect them.

Bill calls me the egg-timer. Now that you've seen most of the phases of the egg growth, you'll forever remember them when you check your clutches. :)

Its all about learning. They were abandoned after all, and you gave it all you had.

With finches, far to many dont hatch with artificial incubation. Finch eggs are just so delicate. We can't hope to duplicate their parents natural methods. Eventhough I keep my incubator on standby all heated up and ready to go, I truly invite anyone to slap me silly if I use it. I think its more just a reminder of how hard it is.

But thank you for the journey, And the journey down memory lane. *Pat pat* Its okay buddy.

Babs Oh, don't worry! I'm a tiny bit disappointed, but that was a great experience, and I was expecting them to die from day 1! I'm really proud of myself, and I was really surprised with how stoic I could be about it. I'm usually a lot lazier than I have been this last two weeks.

I'm really really glad I tried it, because these two chicks contributed massively to science and boosted my confidence by quite a lot! They definitely weren't wasted.

I'll be sure to post the next adventure when it happens, it was great fun!

lem2bert I'm sure it will hatch just fine, since my stinkbutt hen is actually sitting on it.

Had I left her to her own devices, the first four eggs would be rotten by the time she started sitting on the last egg!

Zeb's don't start sitting on the eggs until they have finished laying all their eggs.

Dramoth Yes, that's true.

The eggs also expire if the hen doesn't sit before day 7. For some odd reason, she never laid this last egg until well over a week!

This hen was in very poor condition when I bought her. Maybe she is not quite recovered yet.
