Lost a birdie today :(

Post by FinchGrinch » Fri Mar 10, 2017 9:34 pm

My fawn pied Society hen ( Brownie) was in the corner floor of the flight and wasnt moving much. The others seem to pick at her from time to time, that is how I noticed her. As soon as I got her out of the flight I gave her a shot of calcium to the beak and put her in a small cage with a towel on the bottom. I didnt even have time to get my heat light before she was gone. It was almost as if the calcium finished her off. I have no idea how long she was in the bottom of the cage. I assume she was egg bound but I could not tell by looking her over.

She was the one hen who I let have a clutch of babies, so her legacy lives on. I have 4 beautiful chicks that she raised, however she was one of my favorites. One of her chicks looks like her, in shade of color.

So sorry! I lost one like that shortly after I got birds again. Upset me no end as I'm sure it has you. Apparently the only pets I can have that I won't cry over are fish.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

Yes I did but I couldnt feel anything that seemed abnormal with the shape of her belly.

Sorry for your loss :(. Unfortunately you sometimes can't do anything in time... May Brownie's memories live on in her cute babies.

Then she wasn't egg bound.

Was she at all out of sorts the last few days?

So sorry for your loss. Often with finches, we have no idea what happened, they hide any illness so well.

I am so sorry you lost your beautiful little girl :( It is amazing how fast those little ones find a space in our hearts. I am very happy that you have a beautiful little fawn chick to remember her by, Peanut is just too adorable :)

No she seemed just fine that morning.

What was odd is that even though she was at the bottom of the cage, she seemed to be upright just fine. When I put her in the hospital cage on a towel she couldnt sit up straight and arched her head up and back and her wing out. Thinking back on how she looked, im wondering if she was injured some how. At the time I just thought she was reacting to being egg bound, which now I dont believe she was. My wife was watching her while I went to get the heat lamp. She said shortly after I left to go out in my garage, the finch laid straight and pushed her legs out straight then that was it. She was gone.

I did notice the home made swing that I made for the finches was knocked out of place and was hanging only by one side. But that is not abnormal, they have knocked it that way before. But I still have to wonder if in a panic, a noise or something, she got spooked, ran into the swing then fell? I can only speculate.

Thank you for all of your kind words.

Sometimes they get caught in something, and struggle to the point of exhaustion to free themselves, only to die soon after. I have lost some birds that way, and some who didn't manage to free themselves. It's a sad way to die.

I'm sorry this happened to your girl.
