First zebra chick!
It pipped externally last night, and when I peeked in this morning, I see it has begun to zip!
Yay. About time, it is 2 days overdue.

Baby is born, but... tossed to the floor and cold!! Luckily I got to it before it died. Its shell had been eaten too eagerly by mom, and it seems to have bled a lot. I hope it's ok.

So sorry! And that is why I do NOT want to breed. I would NOT be calm about all the losses you have had to weather.
This is the SECOND time a nesting situation has gotten away from me. I sure hope it's the last! If only we had birdy birth control that I could slip in their water or something ...

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

Re: First zebra chick!
Sojourner Oh I assure you I was far from calm, especially on the inside. No matter how many times I lose a bird, it always makes me feel like a tremendous failure, and this first clutch has been incredibly sad despite my most grueling efforts.
But, when I was in the habit of rearing and rehabilitating unwanted and wild birds, only one out of every dozen would survive a trauma! And that's with my most disciplined care.
But regardless of how poorly it makes me feel, or how frustrating it gets, I keep trying to care for them the best I can, because they deserve that chance, and I alone could give it to them.
Even if your breeding goes poorly, your chicks die, your cock gets sick and your hen stays mad at you for a week, you've got to do what's best for them and their health, even if it feels terrible, and try again later when the situation improves.

I'm sorry you lost the little one.
You said it bled. Are you sure mom & dad didn't peck it a few times before they tossed?
Anymore eggs hatching today?

Re: First zebra chick!
Babs not yet! 10 days to go on the quail- I had some early DIS and some infertile.
Heta picked up another clutch today, but they're from the same batch and not gonna hatch, lol. But now they've got no choice but to put out fresh ones! I married a clever girl.
