Updates:

So while this little miracle baby is still alive and well, acting just dandy and fine, she is not digesting her food. I've noticed that since this incident, she's been passing seed in her droppings in their entirety (i.e. not digested at all).

I'm trying to figure out the relationship between the egg binding and the failing of the GI tract...would the binding have damaged her internal organs to prevent digestion from occurring?

She's still eating, drinking, no sign of another egg on the way, peepin and cheepin...but hasn't had any normal looking stool.

Still gotta post some images/videos, I've just been VERY FORTUNATE to have a job that is lax and understand and has let me stay home to watch over her the past couple of days, squeezing in my 40 hr workweek around my bird's schedule. Very very appreciative of that!

I am in the office today and I will be until late tonight, but she looked alright when I left.

GouldieFledge

I am so happy that little girl is feeling better.

Regarding the undigested seed in her poopies.

She might have developed some sort of a yeast infection, due to the stress, infections, antibiotic use, etc.

I found an old thread, and I would def give it a try...
http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20606

Day 1... probiotics (can be ordered on line, or bought in some pet shops).

Day 2 & 3... Diluted Organic Unfiltered ACV
3 ml to 1 liter of water.

Day 4... probiotics

Follow the link, some good info in there.

Good luck :D

If you can, add some apple cider vinegar to the drinking water, just like, 2 or 3 drops per oz of water and offer her soft egg food and boiled rice. She might have an unbalanced GI chem from the burst egg disrupting her system; it often causes a bacterial bloom. Avoid giving her anything with sugar.

If she will eat it, you could also offer her some handfeeding formula mixed in with the egg. It's very easy to digest. Best of luck!

Thank you both! I will try all of this; I have probiotics, ACV, and handfeeding formula all on hand.

I thought this definitely meant the end--glad that's not necessarily the case!!

Afternoon,

She's a little quieter today.

I made th eggfood with some handfeed formula mixed in, but she's not eating it, from what I've seen.

I'm unsure about when to begin the probiotics/ACV, based on the antibiotic usage. I've been looking around to see how may days I should administer for this particular situation w/the eggbinding, but no luck. It's only been 2 days of the rx (went w/baytril again), and at the moment I have a small amount of plain, unadulterated water w/her until I figure out if I should continue another day of meds, or start the probiotic/acv instead.

If you're using an antibiotic, you should always finish the course before quitting, just in case.

mistergribs that's exactly why i'm not sure what to do. The enrofloxyn has a course schedule of 7-10 days, depending on the issue. For the atrophying foot, I used a 10 day course.

So I'd think you would need to use it for at least the consecutive week--but if she's having yeast issues and can't absorb nutrients, I run the risk of her starving to death. I don't know of she'd make it another 5 days before i can do the acv and probiotics.

GouldieFledge

I would start on the ACV at least.
It will not interfere with the antibiotic, and I think it will be beneficial .

I found this information- while it's regarding a fledgling crow and not a finch, it could be useful information.

http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/f6/can-ap ... 381?page=2

I retract my suggestion to continue the antibiotic! To me it seems you should check your antibiotic to see if it's alkaline based, and if it is, it's probably best to stop the antibiotic, as it will not only counteract the ACV, but bind to her calcium as well and prevent her from absorbing any.

It's probably better to just feed calcium and AVC from this point to restore her. You're such a good bird parent, keep it up!
