gomer wrote:good design.I like the raised section in the covered area good for wind protection.have you got a area for perching up there? or is it just to raise the roof ? Do you have mice in your area? We have native rats and mice around here. The mice can walk through 12.5mm wire very easily. To overcome that I have tin all around the bottoms of my aviarys to overcome this.
Good observation gomer, I specifically designed it so I can put some perches in the raised section. At this stage there are also a couple of nests up there. I have constructed some bolt-on section that I will put up during the colder months for increased wind and chill protection. This includes the triangle section of the roof and a larger portion of the exposed side. The tin around the side is a good idea, I will definitely add that soon.

I improved the setup a little over the weekend by adding a safety area to the front. Will post a new pic in a day or 2.

Well I completed my safety area a week ago but just took some pics this morning. What do you guys think?

The birds really seem to enjoy it, my shaftail flock have settled in very nice, it looks like 2 pairs are starting to breed. Also in my star/grenadier/parrot finch partition someone is building a nest (hope it's the grenadiers but I'll take any babies).

It looks wonderful! I am curious, do you have your shaftails mixed in with other breeds?

No Donna, the aviary is spilt into 3 partitions, the shaftails are on their own in the left one. I had too much trouble with the shaftails in the mixed aviary, I had much more sucess once I moved them to their own enclosure. The 4 pairs in this aviary are all new acquisitions, my old shaftails are separated to another aviary.

Looks great. Wish I was building an aviary instead of buying cages... Maybe when I'm retired. She who thinks finches belong outside, has even agreed that someday when we have no dog, and we retire to Winnipeg, we will build a small walk-in flight with a safety area (because we still will have cats) in our diningroom! \:D/ She's really coming around!
