OK I have been working with her to breathe/clear mucus from her airway this entire time. She has been breathing more steadily and less frantically, so I took off the neck brace. She will accept electrolytes with a smsll drop of ACV per tsp, which I have been feeding her a TINY amount of at a time.

I can't believe she's back, I am shocked and still ready to bury her under the orange tree any minute...

She did go under the orange tree. I tried as hard as I could, I'm so amazed I got her breathing again, but there was no use the second time. At least she will be the last baby zeeb I have to bury.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You did an amazing job with her, above and beyond. I have never, ever heard of anyone resuscitating a bird before.
I feel you pain, it's always so difficult to lose a bird. I'm very sorry.

ann lovezebs It happens. They're so so fragile, and all you can do is your best.

Resuscitating a bird isn't nearly as hard as hand-feeding them to be honest. It just takes a very long time; Jyvä took three hours to fully resuscitate and stabilize.

I was trained in avian CPR when I worked in petsmart. For a tiny, 4 day old finch baby I had to improvise, but the procedure is the same with the exception of inserting a tiny paper straw into the glottis itself to inflate the lungs and air sacs, and using a paintbrush or other small item to firmly rub the chest rather than squeeze it. It's absolutely worth learning, you can save a lot of animals in a lot of situations.

Please, please look into it, and -always- have an emergency kit on hand with cannulas, alcohol swabs, tiny aspirators or straws (to clear the airway) and a small aquarium air pump, if you've got one. http://www.wingwise.com/cpr.htm

Thank you for your condolences, but I'm sure I'm going to have a sore... behind for couple of days. I loved that little bird.

Trying to keep a chick alive after it's bludgeoned by it's parent can be an impossible task. =((

I've gone through the same, mistakenly putting a baby back in the nest after a hen tossed it, only having the mother toss the chick again.......and kill another in the clutch in her pursuit of that one I placed back in.

I too was unable to save the chick from the injuries of the second fall.
Their bodies are tiny and fragile, and there is no way of telling exactly what internally is injured. You just do your best. And you did your best.

Hopefully the quails will hatch and you will have some welcome balls of fuzz running around soon.

Oddly , she raised the rest of the chicks in the clutch just fine.

Babs I hear some peeping inside my favorite egg!

Finches are such jerks. if only we could communicate with them and give them the option of dropping off their unwanted babies in a tiny deposit box for us to collect instead of abusing them.

Hee hee! An "Unwanted Finch Baby Deposit Box!" Maybe Elana can sketch us up a design for one when her finger heals. :)

Peeping inside the egg! Now that is cuteness overload! Sounds like new life stirs just hours after your sad visit to the orange tree. Rather symbolic, yes?

Babs Yes, Jyvä was hatched just a few hours after Itu died.

I'm glad I'm getting some precocious chicks. They essentially skip infancy and hatch out as kindergartners.
