Identify male or female owl's

Dear All,
I recently purchased 2 owl finches.Please help me identify male or female.They both make meow sound and roost together at night.

Hi,
I read that the males are supposed to have slightly thicker black bands than the females. I've the same problem identifying mine, they both look the same :/

It does look like one has a thinner upper band so you may be lucky. Other than DNA testing, you can only tell if the male sings and the female lays an egg!

Thanks Elana and Gouldian guy .It's very frustrating.Both these birds emit a meow sound when I play a owl finch singing video.I haven't seen any of them singing yet, however one of them makes a sound trademark of zebra finches.I will have to wait and see then .

I have kept them with 5 gouldians and thesee two fellas have occupied the best top nest.Often I see one of them attacking violently if any of my gouldians try to sit get close by the nest during evening.

Are owls compatible with gouldians in a aviary.

athens.asad ,The cock bird is on the left on all the photos.

There is a marked difference between your 2 birds. Your eye must just develop.

Cock bird has a whiter face and broader black line on the chest.

I will put some of my finchclub's sexing photos up. Where birds are held in the hand, the cock bird will always be on the left.

Regarding Owls and Gouldians...
Nornally I would say yes, that they should be fine together.
However that said, like many other species, when breeding the breeding pair can get aggressive with both other species, and with members of their own species.

If you experience too many problems, I would house the Owls seperately for breeding.

GouldianGuy For all the difficult to sex birds, the birdclub that I belong to has these sexing 101 photo's, showing all the differences between the sexes.

Good day,

I have found the thin bar, thick bar on m/f Owls not to be as reliable as it's supposed to be, unless you have lots of experience with Owls and have seen many of them.

However what I did find fascinating (and you might laugh at me) is the fact that you were talking about the males in the pictures always being on the left.

Looking back at all the pictures that I have of my true pair, darn it if my male is not always sitting to the right of my female, therefore being on the left side of the picture

Too funny-I just went to check out my owls again, because I couldn't tell who was male and who was female, and the bird with the slightly wider band was also on the left.
