Oh, oh....I bought a new cage....

I have one of the HQ cages with the two large doors and I have birds get out all the time when I get in cage,well I found A way to stop them completely so far. The plastic that you get by the yard at walmart the real clear take piece just about A inch wider than the width or the door approx.
12inch x 36 inch .The HQ cage has A bar that is just above the door frame ,I took the plastic end and fasten to this bar on the inside of cage and let it hang down blocking both doors on the inside of cage ,When you open the door just put your hand in the plastic covers the rest of the opening. It realy don't show that much

Thanks for that tip, BCamp - that will really help when I'm putting flat dishes of their eggfood on the floor of the cage everyday.

Good idea!

In fact, you could also cut a flap in the middle of the larger flap, that's closer to your desired size, to slip your hand through, to make for even less of a chance of escapes. Wish I'd thought of this when I was cage shopping.

I really don't think you need the hole try it, the way it moves out of the way when you put your hand in it don't leave much of A hole for them to fly out of . this is the heavy wieght plastic not that real thin type.
My problem was a pair of orange cheeks seemed like one got out every time I got in cage [there hard to catch ]

Yes I know the kind, it's heavy like vinyl used to cover picnic tables etc. I use a piece of it hanging on the back of my cage to keep the curtain behind it clean. If I have a scrap somewhere left over I can try it on the new cage, on the one larger door. Thanks for a great idea.

I warned you I'm a procrastinator....

I went out today instead of staying in and putting it together. Just not enough hours in a weekend to get everything done. It's not going to take long once I start...
Maybe tomorrow I'll take a pic. It's a cheaper lighter cage than some, but the price was right. I got the cable ties to secure it better, but will get the wood trim next weekend - couldn't find black coroplast.

The GBs are sure sitting tight! So I do have to get this second cage together eventually! Tho babies will need to be separated eventually. No idea how many eggs they have (at least 3).

I promise I'll put that darn cage together tomorrow...

Well Liz,

You'll be pleased to know I've put !@@#$%%*(&^) cage together!

What a job! It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. My needlenose pliers are cheap, and with my arthritis it was hard to tighten, so used some cable ties to keep it together.

It still has the grille in the bottom, which I will remove when I have a bit of money to get the wood to frame around the bottom just above the tray instead.

Then I need to put a board under the tray, or wire, to keep the birds in when the tray is out for cleaning(when there's no grille). Then just some silk plants to make it more homey and it will be ready. Now when the babies are weaned I'll have room to separate them. Yeay!

Here's the new cage:

Here are my new cage and the cage I made. You can see it's just about the same size, just a shorter stand. Once I get the grill thing sorted out and get plants and a light, I'll be happy with it. May also put it on a stand I have in the storeroom, which will bring it up to the same height as the other cage.

Oh yeah, forgot I'll have to figure out how I'm going to put some sort of skirt on it to keep seed in. Plexi glass maybe, since I have some that I meant to put on the other cage. It doesn't seem to let much seed scatter, so I haven't bothered, but this new cage doesn't have the high wooden sides on the bottom, so it will need something...

Anyway, now I have an excuse to go shopping at Michaels for plants.

Well I'm tired now (I know, it's only 9:30 on a Saturday night, but this cage building is tiring work!

Off to shower and have an early night....

I have the answer to excaping birds. My niece gave me a pair of panty hose. Shut up Mickp!!!!! I use S hooks and hook them over the door. Then I cut 1 leg off at the knee and put my hand through that. no way they can get out.
