How are the youngsters, and have the parents started another clutch?
The youngsters are doing fine. These parents seem to feed them a little less since they left the nest box (and less than our Red-headed male parent did) but then these fledglings are trying to eat seed and drink water sooner than any other fledglings we have had in the past.

The parents haven't started another clutch as of today and I hope they hold off a few more weeks.

Well, the day after I said a second clutch wasn't started, there was the first egg of the second clutch in the nest box!

Hah haah hah!
I figured they'd be started on clutch number two in no time.
It seems that once they get on a roll, it's hard to get them to stop, unless you take the nest away, and move them into another cage or flight.

Glad to hear that the wee ones are doing well, and good luck with clutch #2.

Our new red-headed white breasted pair are also sitting on eggs. These birds are a little over a year old and this is there first breeding season. We got them from the same breeder. For there first attempt they laid two eggs (about a month ago) and only one was fertile and when it started to hatch the male tossed it twice. We gave it to an unproven trio of Societies but they didn't feed it.

This pair now has 4 eggs so far (with maybe a few more to come). We will give them another chance and if this doesn't work out we will give the next clutch of eggs to one of our 2 proven pairs of Societies, depending on the timing. The breeder said that often with just one chick many Gouldians will toss.

Hope all goes well mate :-BD

Yep must admit that I've often found it difficult with just one chick in the nest, if I get a nest of just one chick I try to recognise the chick in some way and then place it in another nest of where there maybe just a couple , I've found that a nest of 3 is the ultimate chance of survival.

Rearing :

X 1 chick = difficult
X 2 chicks = doable
X 3 chicks = perfect
X 4 chicks = ok
X 5 chicks = tricky
X 6 chicks = hard

Thanks for that info. I think she is done laying eggs and incubation has started today on 4 eggs. I hope at least three are fertile and that the male behaves himself. He is a good nest sitter.

Our black-headed female laid her second egg this morning. The fledglings are a week old and still go in the nest box to sleep. I hope they don't accidentally crack any eggs. I think the first night or two after fledging they slept on the branch with the parents, but after that they decided they preferred the nest box for sleeping.
