Those weird locating bumps that baby gouldians have are a trip.

Elana,

A tip based on my banding experience.

Use color coded numbered band on one leg.
- color for the year
- number for the individual bird

And a un-numbered colored band on the other leg.
- color code to match the last digit of the numbered band
example 0 = black, 1 = brown, 2 = red, ...
> It is a LOT easier to see the color of the band, than to try to read the number on the band.

Then keep track of the bands in a spreadsheet.

Color coding by family will break down sooner or later.
And in my case, if I pair the parents up with a different mate next year, how do I do the family band??

At what age do you typically band them? I tried close-ringed banding my society finches at about ten days, but their toes didn't go in easily and they wouldn't stay still, so I had to give up. I compared the bands I purchased to my adult male society finch's band, and they were the same size, so I don't think that was the issue.
A trick that I learned here was to put vaseline or a medical gel (like bacitracin) on the toes to hold the toes together, and on the ankle to help the band slip over. Then wipe most of it off after you band the chick. It can be a little messy, but it does work.

Yes, they don't hold still.
I sometimes feel like I need a third hand.

The alternative is to use split colored plastic bands.
I use these for new inbound birds (adults) and for chicks from first time parents (where I do not close band them in the nest).

Thanks Gary,

I've always used olive oil for banding, but your idea of vaseline is actually great for keeping toes stuck together, lol.

Thanks for the thoughts on bands.

There are people who get freaked out by their nodules thinking they are growths of some kind, giggle.

They will disappear soon enough.

lovezebs they're so colorful, and the reflector quality in them is something I've not seen before in nature, other than on a very low level in some orb weaver webs.

All 5 fledglings are doing well, and fitting in with the rest of the crew.

I saw one of the yellows eating by himself today.
