Vera, are we talking Gouldians?
Gouldians, should not be rehomed, until after they finish their first molt.

Indeed, they seem to be very curious and amused about nests, chicks, eggs, everything connected whith breeding.
They are the most nosey birds i have ever had, always sneaking in someone else's nest.
When i handle the nests to check on the eggs or babies, some birds fly / perch over my head, stretching their necks almost broken, so they can see wat's going on.
I do belive they get inputs from one another.

Hahaha! Conjures images up all kinds of cute images of nosey neighbors.
I think they also toss chicks more when they see other pairs doing it. As if they think "well everyone else throws them out then thats what I should do"

When is their first molt - is that around six months?lovezebs wrote: Vera

Curious why that is - I rehomed my societies around seven weeks which I understood was normal. Why would the Gouldians need that much longer?
Thanks!

Waiting for the bird to mature is necessary before it can be sexed. Gouldians undergo a heavy moult that puts pressure on the immune system and increases risk of illness. Selling the bird will stress it, which can also result in it becoming stuck in moult (where only some of the feathers growing in) or developing shock marks (weaknesses in feathers, seen as narrow horizontal lines across the feathers). As with breeding, moulting birds should start being fed a diet high in protein and nutrients several weeks before to ensure they will be in good health going into an energy-intensive stage.
Here's a site detailing the moult: Molting

Read this thread, and it will give you a pretty good idea why Gouldian youngsters should not be rehomed before first molt.

Not all the posts will have to do with your issue, but read some of mine in this thread.
Gouldian's, are not the same as other species when it comes to molting, and I wouldn't want you or your prospective owners to have to undergo heartache and heart break.
Your youngsters, should have the best food at this time, warmth, and peace and quiet. They sould be disturbed as little as possible until they're finished with their first molt and fully coloured.

Re: Trying to breed goulds in aviary
Thank you so much for the information related to when to rehome Gouldians. I have bred Societies before and assumed the Gouldians could be rehomed at about the same age so I am very appreciative to have this information.
