Complete Uterine Prolapse

Post by lovezebs » Mon Jul 03, 2017 1:51 am

Sadly I found my Freebee (Budgie) in dire straits tonight when I went to turn off the bird lights.

Freebee, has never shown any interest in breeding, her cage mate, or in laying eggs, so I never had any concerns about this.

Well today I found her with a huge hard egg, encased in her prolapsed uterine tissues, covered in blood and hanging outside of her body.

Immediately rushing her to the washroom, I turned on the warm water over the drying tissues, trying to assess the situation and figure out what to do.

There was no way that egg was going to pass through the dry tissue that it was encased it.

Doing the only thing I could think of doing, I broke the egg, removing it's pieces on bit at the time under the warm running water.

Once all the egg was removed, I washed the swollen tissues under cool water, coated it in polysporine tripple action, poked some liquid calcium into the side of her reluctant beak, and parked her under a warm light.

Say a little prayer for my little Freebles, as I doubt she will last the night.

Babs

Freebee, amazingly is still with us.

A lot of the swelling has gone down, and gone back in, but there is still a portion that's hanging outside the body with some poop stuck to it. I will give her a wash shortly and see what else we can do (which is very little really).

She doesn't appear to be in any major discomfort as she was last night. She is making use of a warm lamp.

Wow!
A harrowing experience for all involved. Nice avian gynecology work on your part. I am a bit surprised that she has done this well considering it is such a major injury.
Lets hope she makes it and can retire gracefully.

I hope she survives, my poor wee girlie.

It is an awful thing to see, and shocking eventhough I have seen some pretty horrific injuries in my time.

Babs

Thanks sweetie.

She's still hanging in there poor girl. She's alert, sitting under a warm light, and giving me the evil eye everytime I walk near the cage.

I am at a loss.
I know that ideally this mass should be inserted back into where it belongs, but I have a suspicion that it will just pop out again, and I would have caused excruciating pain for nothing.

I didnt want to say it, but I was thinking somehow you can push it back up gently. You have nerves of steel my friend.

Last night would have one of those I would have......you know :(
By the Gods I hope it helps

No 'you know' yet. She's still willing to fight me, and fight for her life, and so life goes on.

As to nerves of steel, far from it, more like nerves of jello.

I have very little hope of a good outcome in this situation my dear.

lovezebs So sorry to hear this. The one time I had a prolapse on one of my finches, I did managed to pushed it back in, but she passed anyway. I don't think you can do much more than you have. At least she is still hanging in there, which is more than my little hen did, so prayers are sent your way.

Babs Sally paul-inAZ

Well our little Freebee lost her battle this evening, along with the little old Zebra that was companion to Max for the last while.

Freebee probably died due to Sepsis and shock
And the little old fella probably due to old age

So they set off on their journey over the Rainbow bridge together....

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Such pretty birds. You did better than most vets would have done.

wildbird

Thank you.

I did what I could to at least try and keep Freebee as comfortable as I could.
As for my old Zebra, I knew he was old when I got him.

For both it was just a matter of time.....
