Got 3 new finches and didnt place on quarantine

Post by OhNayeli » Wed Aug 23, 2017 2:45 am

Hello i am new to the forum and need some advice. I bought 3 female finches, I have other birds aswell, i have 6 cockatiels in a big cage. When i got home i separated a corner at the bottom of that cage and placed them there. I made sure i secured everything very well so they cant get out or so that my cockatiels cant get into that area. On top of the cage i have a cage with 2 sun conures, next to the big cage a cage with 2 parakeets in front of that cage around 2 ft away i have a cage with 2 male finches on top of that one, a pair of finches and on top of that another male finch. I know it was a big mistake to place them in a cage without putting them in quarantine but i didnt have another cage and didnt want to place 3 males finches in the same cage and now i fear the new finches have mites (which i think they might have) and that now all of my birds have them aswell.

What im planning on doing is getting some branches soaking them in water with alittle bit off bleach rinse them and soak in clean water then letting them sun dry, then replace the perches with the branches and clean the toys nests and bowls the same way as the branches and washing all of the cages with warm water and a brush. I ordered s76 and it will arrive soon and i am planning on treating all of my birds (18 in total) then when i am done with the treatment i will buy a bigger cage for the finches and place all of them (8) and clean everything again. Do you guys think that what i am planning on doing will be a good idea if not can you guys me some suggestions on what i can do.

OhNayeli and Fraza ( Cindy )

It is always a good practice to quarantine new birds, as a cautionary measure so as not to introduce diseases to your present flock of birds or vice versa.

Fraza: You can be lucky for a long time without quarantine, then suddenly end up with a sick or dying flock .

Regarding mite treatment, I've tagged Cindy for you. She should be able to tell you which meds are best.

I would caution you on adopting Fraza's indifference to quarantine.
Pet stores in particular are the riskiest sources of new birds.
Introducing disease can wipe out your aviary. Catastrophic and not fun to start over again.

Agree with the others that not quarantining new birds risks the entire flock. You can get away with it for a while, but eventually it will catch up to you. Losing an entire flock is disastrous, and even dealing with serious illnesses in an entire flock can be catastrophic.

The best quarantine is in an entirely separate building. Few of us can do that, so the next best thing is in a separate room. If that is not possible, then in the same room. Always feed/water/clean your existing birds first, then wash your hands thoroughly, and then deal with the new birds.

Sugar is not good for finches, I would not be adding that to their water. Instead, there are commercial supplements that you can get to boost your birds' health.

Thank You For Replying And In The Future If I Get New Birds I Will Definetly Place Them In Quarantine. As Soon As I Read About All The Things That Could Go Wrong I Regretted My Decision Of Buying New Birds As I Feared For The Health Of The Rest Of My Birds, But They Seem To Be Doing Good And I Will Be Treating All Of Them With S76.

Thank You For Replying, And I Agree It Would Be Horrible To Lose Birds Over This Mistake, I Definetly Wont Do It Again. I Did Want To Quarantine Them But Didnt Have An Extra Cage I Only Had A Super Small Cage That I Took To The Store When I Bought Them And I Didnt Want Them To Be In That Cage For Too Long.

I Have A Question Do You Have Any Idea Of What I Can Do To Keep Ants Away Or Any Products That I Can Use To Kill Them That Are Safe For Birds? I Sweep The Area Where The Cages Are At Everyday And Mop The Floor Atleast Once A Week But The Day Before Yesterday There Were Ants All Over The Floor I Killed Them But Yesterday There Were Even More Ant Not Only On The Floor But Also On The Tray And All Over The Bottom Half Of The Cage.

OhNayeli
If you put the cage on a stand, then place the stand in a container full of water, it should produce a moat to keep the ants away. A few species, such as fire ants, can survive in water, so I don't know how that would work with them.
