Male zebra finch cheeks never appeared?
I got two young juvenile zebra finches from a friend. Back then, we didn't know what sex they were because of their age. Now they're both 7 1/2 months old and I am entirely sure they're both male because they both have a black breast bar, the speckled feathers, red beaks and they both sing a lot. (Plus I have never found an egg once) Anyway, one of them was the most unique in the whole clutch. He's was mostly white with some black details, I assumed he was of the pied variation but I'm not a finch genetics expert. His brother grew cheek patches, as well as the markings I listed. But my pied guy never grew his cheek patches. He went through the slow progressive moult process just as his brother, but the cheek feathers just grew back white except one tiny spot on one side. He's definitely a boy though, he straightens his body up cutely as they do to sing. My question is, is this a common occurrence? The lack of cheek patches in a male. I've searched about it before but I couldn't find anything.
I also know of the chance of some society finch being in their mothers line, but I can't verify that. Thanks!

It's a pure, normal pied zebra finch. The pied markings in his case simply cover the cheeks, preventing the orange coloration from showing.

Welcome to the Forum from Canada,
Pretty bird.
There are some mutations, that simply don't show the cheek patches,so no worries.

Hi from Massachusetts. I do not have much knowledge about zebras. I just wanted to say that I love the contrast of the black and white feathers with that bright red beak !! Beautiful !!

Man that bird is beautiful.
How come this one came out like that being son of two zebras? Is this the result of inbreed? Is this bird considered society finch now?
Sorry for high jack the thread...

GoldPanther it's a pied zebra finch, similar to what I wrote in your post about your all white finch.

Thanks everyone for your responses. No, he isn't the product of inbreeding. Just won the genetic lottery I guess. Glad everyone likes him, he's a very special bird to me, as well as his brother. I was told his mother has some society finch in her. However she looks like a normal zebra finch, light peach beige in colour. That's about all I know about how a finch that looks this way was bred.
