Canary X Gouldian (?)

Post by lovezebs » Thu Oct 05, 2017 3:52 pm

Hi All Bird Lovers,

I found this video on line, and it has me puzzled :-?? .

Not sure if these people are claiming that the Canary and Gouldian are a mated pair raising chicks together, or if the Gouldian is simply helping feed the Canary's chicks (?)

As far as I know, these two species are unable to breed and create hybrid chicks. Any opinions???

I personally don't think that there the gouldians chicks, I think that the gouldian is just helping to feed em,

I've never eve heard of any such breedings with gouldian x canary hybrids and doubt that it would be done as there not really compatible apart from the fact that the dietary requirements are completely different

They can't cross-breed but he's being a good papa and helping feed her chicks anyway!

Not sure what is meant by the diets are different, my canaries and finches eat the same diet.

Hi Stuart and Dylan,

That's was my thought as well. It's just weird, that they are only showing these two birds in the cage, and named the Video GouldianCanary :-?? .

Regarding the diet, my Canaries and Finches eat the same diet as well. I buy large bags of Canary Seed mix and Finch Seed mix, and mix them together for all of my flock, Canaries, Waxbills and other Finches. Everyone eats the same mix.

The only ones that get a slightly different diet, are my Linnies and Budgies, who get an addition of Small Hookbill mix added to the regular seed mix.

Yea know what yer saying about the seed diet as most birds pick through various seeds, I was more so talking in jest and what is the norm IE canaries normally associate with plain canary, rape, hemp and linseed whereas gouldians are more associated with a variety of millet seed and a little plain canary

I think that yer could be very much right there mate

Well done for the observation as I rekon that the babies are gouldians chicks aswell, I also noticed that after watching the video again that the canary hen didn't actually feed the youngsters, the gape spots of the gouldians probably confused her a little,

Can't see properly but I'd say the gouldian is a cock bird, the person had possibly lost the hen gouldian where it may of unfortunately died and the canary hen is just basically acting as a foster by sitting in the nest as many canary hens often do :YMSMUG:
