I'm sure you'll do alright with the greenies but remember though mate we don't keep birds to make money,

Only the very big parrot and bird of prey breeders generally make a fair bit of money, as for the likes of ourselves with the finches a bit of money back basically helps to pay towards the birds needs IE seed, egg / soft foods, live foods and medication etc and if yer lucky might pay for one or two new birds

Stuart whiting yeh that’s what I meant like my money back on what I’m spending so enough for when they need maybe a new bed and seeds and stuff like u said and then a new pair, not gonna make anywhere near a fortune are they hahaha (I wish ) but yeh after this breedingg spurt I’m gonna stop the breeding, every finch has somehow got eggs. ITS MADNESS
However if each pair has 3 chicks then that’s £100 also it’s all there first clutch apart from one zeb I’m this way if they manage to breed again it won’t be big problem biecause it would be there second clutch but just wanna leave a gap in between

Best thing to do Fraza is count yer penny's once those youngsters have fledged, weaned and them become independent :D

That way yer can be sure of a few quid to help pay for a few things etc

Hi boys,

Fraser, if I depended on the money I've made off my birds to live on, I would have starved a long time ago :)) .

I never even come close to getting back a fraction of what I spend on food for them. I spend a heck of a lot of money on these kids, which I will never see back in this life time.

This is a hobby, period!!! It's not a money making scheme. If you want to make money, go to school, get a great job, and enjoy your birds on your off time my boy.

Stuart, you mention breeding Birds of Prey, is that even allowed in England? Is there actually a market for Hawks, Eagles, and such?

Arh yes Elana, the breeding of all birds of prey in England is truly a massive part of bird keeping in England, many breeders specialise in owls, Falcons, Hawks and eagles, these will be all varieties of English and foreign birds :-BD

Obviously every bird of prey in England will have to be licensed but to any serious bird of prey specialist/ enthusiast this will not be a problem :D

Fraza

What's "maddbess"? Sorry not familiar with that term .

I actually sell very few of my birds Fraser, that's why I don't allow them to breed all too often. I find it difficult to part with my babies, and the bit of money that I get for the ones I do occasionally sell ( simply for lack of space) wouldn't really make it worth my while and all the work and time that goes into their care.

I just really love the birds themselves, and the hobby itself.

If I had more space, I probably wouldn't sell any, maybe give some away to people whom I knew really wanted them, and would take very good care of them.

Like I said, this is (for me) a hobby, not something that I do for income.

Saving your money for some nice birds though, is a wonderful idea my boy, and I wish you the best of luck with that :-BD .

Very interesting indeed.
I had no idea that this was part of bird keeping in the UK.

Who on earth buys these birds? Or is it just a breeder's market? Do some people actually keep them as pets, or is it done for conservational reasons? Do people still go Hawking ?

I've always loved Hawks, and Falcons, ever since I was a kid . I'm also rather partial to some of the small Owls <3 . Aren't these guys just adorable....

lovezebs okay I didn’t mean to offend u or say it affensove and madness is like crazy I was just meaning if u have an aviary of 12 finches and they have chicks I can’t keep em as I don’t have enough room to seperate then from the parents and stop interbreeding

And I don’t breed them just for the income I just think it’s natural for them to have atleast 1 clutch so they bring up a chick of there own

I actually really struggle to stop the breeding of certain pairs as they will do anything to breed

However u are rather expierenced and I know what u do is right for ur birds :D

Also the people that buy them for more tend to look after them better meaning that I can send my chicks to good home.

My great auntie and uncle want two of the chicks when grown so I know I have a home for two

After this spurt of breeding I’m gonna give them all a break for a month then put the nests back in and see if they wish to breed again as they all have there first clutch at the moment apart from finchie who’s on her second I might bring her inside for a while longer to not damage her

No worries Fraser.

I am not judging you for selling your birds kiddo. I just hope that that's not your only reason for keeping birds.

I have come across people who keep birds just for the money they can get out
of breeding them endlessly. This shortens the birds lives, and raises the odds of egg binding, disease, and death.

It's these kind of people that I really have a problem with.

Haven't got the wrong end of the stick atall Fraza, I was just basically trying to advise but get the impression you've perhaps taken it the wrong way :-O
mearly saying that yer not gonna make money by breeding and selling a few finches, if you were dealing with mutation Siberian bullfinches then this would be a completely different matter where these birds go from £150 - £2000 per bird depending on the rarity of the mutation,

Oh and what is " maddbess " =)) never heard of that :-J....lol

Madness yea but not maddbess

If yer wanna stop em from breeding I've told yer before to take out the nests ( what you call beds ) :-J aswell as all nesting material,

Don't worry about yer birds wanting to sleep in the nests because this is utter rubish, zebras don't need nests to be able to sleep, as long as they've got a draft free shelter of some sort within the avairy they'll be fine,
Only some of the African and Asiatic Estrildid finches used domed nests to roost in of a night :YMSMUG:
