Male Finch Pecking At Baby

Post by OhNayeli » Sat Nov 04, 2017 12:41 am

Hello everyone i seem to have awhat i think is an emergency today i noticed the eggs a female finch layed hatched. WHhen i fed the other pair of finches that had eggs i looked at the nest from above and noticed what looked like a baby i could see there were more but didnt manage to count them. For the past few hours the female seems to be making alot of noise and goes in and out of the nest i checked right now there seem to be two dead babies they have like a greyish color and i dont see them moving there is another baby that is alive but is laying on his back the male finch stood outside the nest and kind of grabbed him with his beak and tossed him (still inside the nest) What do i do the female finch keeps goin back and forth to the nest and checks and leaves. Should i try to remove the ones that look dead and turn the other one around or do i just leave them alone and hope for the best??

Tried editing my post to fix it but couldnt, ignore my post above

Hello everyone i seem to have a problem today i noticed the eggs a female finch layed hatched. When i fed the other pair of finches that had eggs they both came out of the nest and ii looked at the nest from above and noticed a few babies i think 3 but only one moved and it was laying on its back. The male finch stood outside the nest and pecked the baby and tossed him (not far and still inside the nest) The female seems to be making alot of noise and goes in and out of the nest.

3 hours have passed and i went again to check on them and a baby is moving not sure if its the same one i saw first but and it has some feathers, the parents are not in the nest they were sleeping in a branch. I think at least one is dead and two are covered. Should i uncover them? remove the male from the cage? or leave them alone and hope for the best and check back in the morning??

Also do the other finches with babies need a night light that wont be too bright or close to them to have some visibility during the night??

OhNayeli

I got rid of the duplicate post for you. What species of finch are they?

As Fraser mentioned, I would immediately take dad out since you saw him already getting violent with the chicks.

Without the warmth of their parents, they may not have survived the night.

If any have survived, remove the dead chick and make sure the living chicks are very visible to mom by uncovering them.

I hope it works out. [-o< Keep us posted.

I eneded up just goin to sleep and left them alone, i saw that they slept outside the nest but they were both back in the nest in the morning, maybe he was trying to turn him around i have no idea or he was annoyed at me looking at them.

I tought about it in the morning and decided i will leave them alone and only go near the cage to change there food and water and see wat happens.

Thanks You For Answering

Thank you, the male is a zebra finch and the female is a mix of an albino and zebra finch i think she is all white but i see some lines in her tail and also some lines in her ckeeks.

Honestly i think it was my fault i heard a few noises from another cage and saw something moving and realized it was a baby and since that finch and this other finch laid eggs at around the same time i realized her eggs had probably hatched as well.
I gave them some veggies and both of the parents left the nest to eat and i moved the cage next to that one to see if they had babies and saw they did i didnt touch them but i was next to the cage just staring at them i think i probably annoyed the dad.
A few hours later i checked again and the male finch did that while i was looking at them. At night i went to see if they went back into the nest and they didnt but in the morning they were both back in the nest and when i changed the seed and water they didnt leave the nest. This was probably 10 hours ago i wansnt home, when i get back home I will change there food again and observe how the parents are acting and if they arent in the nest check on the babies.

Ive never had society's i would like to have some but at the moment i have way to omany birds lol.

So i got home and they were both in the nest the femaale finch went out to eat and the male goes out for a little bit than goes back in.

Anotner question they are in a small nest the other pair has a small plastic nest about the size of half a coconut and its a bit high like 8 inches the other pair has a coconut they stuffed it with newspaper but their nest is at the bottom of the cage in a corner. when can i change them into a bigger nest i am scared as they get bigger they will fall oit??

OhNayeli

I'd need a picture to troubleshoot it. Depending on how the nest is shaped, I'd tilt it back so the babies cant just slip out, or remove bedding so they arent so high.

But without a picture, it's impossible to give you a good answer.

I can move my societies into a bigger nest and they will go on an keep feeding (like you mentioned they are easier).

I dont know if your zebras will abandon or not. I don't own that species.

I try to make sure the nest can securely fit at least 6 chicks without falling out or crowding before I give them the nest. If they lay 8 eggs, I remove 3 and replace with duds right away.

One lovely lady I got one of my javas hens from, her hen insists on nesting in a canary nest and the kids never fit. So she has a cardboard box underneath it filled with coco fiber. When the kids fall out, they fall into the soft box underneath....parents tend both nests. Clever really.
.
Again, its up to your birds and their individual reaction.

I dont know how to add a picture.

I heard societies are great foster parents maybe in the future i will buy a pair.

And i was not planning on breeding them i got the female finches around 2 months ago i added a nest in case they were cold and they look cute in it, now i regret it.

I was thinking of adding newspaper under the nest but i might add a box with some nesting material thx for the idea.

And i checked the nest again i honestly cant see the babies they added thin strips of newspaper on the top they probably took it from the same nest i removed a few pieces with tweezers but i dont want to pull more in case i hurt a baby, the parents are no longer in the nest.

I was thinking of removing the male and removing the extra newspaper but im not sure if the mother will completely abandon them i also dont have a cage for the male i only have one that would barely fit a cockatiel with not much room to move around.I want to save the babies but i feel like the more they see me the less they care about the nest. This is stessful. The other pair of finches seem to be amazing parents and i have no problems with them.

Yes remove the male, if he's hurting the babies, then they have more chance of living without him in the cage, and maybe have the male in a different room so the female can't see him or she may spend all her time frantically trying to get him. And definitely remove dead Babi/es if the parents haven't thrown them out of the nest.

I have some sad news i decided to check the nest one last time before goin to sleep and saw something greyish on the tray of the cage and i imagined the worst i pulled out the tray and there were four babies they were all dead they were probably less than 3 days old.
I think when they were goin into the nest they would land on top of them they are kind of flat on one side.
I checked the nest there were no more eggs or babies and i took it out. I placed the babies in a napkin and put them next to the cage so they can see them. Its so tragic, they were obviously not ready to be parents i hope the babies the other finches make it i can hear them sometimes so i guess its a good sign.

Do you think this will affect them or will they jist move on like if nothing happened??
