Very nice cage Franny....you did a good job!

If you want to consider using clear vinyl sheeting around your cage to keep the poops from shooting out go to this link where I talked about using it on my flight cage. It works great and is easy to clean. And I posted pics of how I attached it using zip ties.

Clear Viny Sheeting Post
Thanks Featherharp. I have it hanging on the back of my cage I built, so will likely do the same for this one. Thought I might also use it to make a skirt around the inside of the bottom half of the cage to keep seed in, too. Can't find clear or black coroplast, but the heavier vinyl will do. I can even lay it on the bottom and use clear wide packing tape to attach the sides to the bottom so no seeds leak out.

The only thing I hadn't really thought of, that I'm not happy with this cage, is that the doors are all on one side, and being the sliding kind, I can't put perches front to back, or they would interfere with the doors movements. Well I guess I'll settle for it, because it was cheap. And so far I plan only to use it for temporary housing for juveniles.

Actually, if I keep working after the olympics are overwith here next year... and am not one of the ones affected by the slowdown in construction... I do plan on building the same cage as my current cage, but with two modifications. I'd use the 1/2" hardware cloth, not the 3/8", as I think this was overkill, and not really necessary. And I'd make it a couple of inches longer and put in a divider! Would be so much safer when I'm cleaning the cage.

This cage is fine as a temporary, but it's not like a nice piece of furniture in the room, if you know what I mean, and then there's the sliding doors which I don't care for. But I just didn't have the energy or the money to be building the birdcage of my dreams at the present time, so I couldn't pass up on this nice big cage for such a good price. I'm sure once I get a light on it, and some plants in it I'll be happier. :)

How much was the final damage for that cage rig?
I paid $90 for the cage & $40 for the stand (plus tax so it was approx $150. It's a nice big cage 18" deep, 32" long by 36" high. Plenty of room for the juvies when I need it. And cheaper (but not much easier :x ) than building my own.

Nice cage!! What brand is it, or did I miss that post? I found a HQ flight cage for $144, which includes shipping. I can't decide what would be better. (Any suggestions?) I heard great things about HQ cages, but your cage looks very nice!

That's the difference between the US and Canada.... :( If I was you I'd get that HQ cage! Much better quality than the one I got. And Sally has already figured out to modify it to use without the grille. The only thing (besides the price and weight that I don't like is the large door. But B Camp, I think it was, pointed out that vinyl hanging on the inside of the door would block escapees. So at that price it's a good buy, in my opinion. For canadian prices, and not having to also add shipping, this was a good option for me though. I don't think you can go wrong with HQ though.

HQ Cage

Post by blueribbontoes » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:27 pm

The cage I want to purchase is from the manufacture's website, They have two.

One, http://www.birdscomfort.com/flight_bird_cage.html, charges actual shipping. So, for my zip code (You have to email the company, but they will gladly give you a quote) it would be $144. ($109, for the cage, and then the shipping.)

The other website has "free" shipping. Which, funny enough, the price of the cage is $144 which is exactly the same as the first website‘s price once shipping has been added. http://www.mybirdcage.com/hq_flight_cage.html

Check it out, and let me know if the cage is junk. HQ has gotten great reviews and I plan on ordering it tomorrow. (However, if you more experienced bird keepers see a major flaw, let me know.) I did A LOT of research online, and this seems to be the cheapest place to find this particular cage. (Including Ebay.) Thanks much!

And Fran, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your cages!

I have the double flight from HQ 16421 the only excape I have had was not through the big door. On the end there is a small door that just snaps closed not like on the big door and that came open and it was the "Great Excape". I used cable ties to lock them closed (1 on each end). I think the one you are looking at is the single flight HQ13221. The double flight is twice as long and has a divder in the middle that can be removed.

Cage Modified

Post by franny » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:37 pm

Well here's a picture of the new cage with the change I'm making. The tray is out, and as you can see, the bottom has some wire on it, but not enough to keep birds in, so I have some 1/8 inch masonite that I'll be putting inside, on top of that wire, to create a solid bottom and keep the birds in while the tray is out for cleaning.

You can see that I've removed the grille that was above the tray opening, and replaced it with a frame of 3/4" X 3/4" fir trim that was just made with simple butt joints. To hold it in place I used a simple mending plate on the outside. (The cable ties are just to hold it in place until all the mending plates are in place.)

Image

When I've got better weather I'll paint the frame, and the mending plates and it will look like it came that way. :) I will screw another piece of trim to the frame, from the outside front of the cage, and will attach hinges to it and hang a door, to close the gap when the tray is out. There's also a gap at the sides caused by the door having to hang from a second piece of trim, rather than just hanging it from the interior frame. (The tray sticks out the front of the cage just a bit, so that's why I will hang the door from some trim, to suspend it out from the front a bit to allow for the tray. I'll add some masonite screwed to the ends of the trim, to hang down and fill the gaps at the ends. I'll take a picture later to show you the door attachment when I get it done.

I kept the grill, and if I break off the ends that were bent around the horizontal cage wires to hold it in place, then it could still be used just by setting it on top of the inside frame. I don't plan to use it, but if I sell the cage, it keeps that option open for those who use them.

Blueribbon,
I purchased a cage the same size as Franny from Amazon.com.
It was $99 and shipping was $12 or something. It's not as nice as Franny's, but the one thing I do like is that the metal grate can be removed and the plastic tray fits up tight against the bottom.

The bad: the stand is part of the cage. It can't be separated.
