I have an "open to the weather" section of my aviary (which I recently added to) and although my Gouldians have been known to sit out in the hail most "normal" birds go in under shelter when its cold etc. Sometimes they will sit out in the rain for a while though, they seem to love it. I guess its only natural!
Good luck with the extension I'am sure they willl love it!
