We've screwed the plastic onto the wood - not ideal I know but I think its safer. And yes, you are correct - there is plastic sheeting on the roof which is also screwed on.
I think because they are out all year they get used to the temperature dropping so are pretty much used to it when the real bad weather comes. They do eat a hell of a lot more though but I don't mind :D

Over this winter we've had up to minus 6 where I am in the South and colder up North.
30+ finches, including Zebra's, 8 Societies,2 Star Finches, 3 Owl Finches, 2 Silver Bills, 2 Diamond Doves, 6 Chinese Painted Quails, 1 Cocker Spaniel, 3 Pond Fish and 20 Tropical Fish

I think your setup is great and is good inspiration for my future outdoor aviary. And you haven't lost any of your finches due to the cold?

I think you would be safe in CA.with your birds outside if you cover with the plastic like readingfc, even if you had to add some heat you could get a heat bulb to heat a small area they will go to it to stay warm.
Now just one more thing get busy and build it :lol: :lol:

BCamp - I'm ready to go on building it, picked out the site in the back yard and everything. My wife just needs a little more convincing! :) Do you keep all your birds outside? What kinds do you have?

Nope, not lost any to the cold weather :D

Very beautiful avairy, I hope one day to have one, but for know I have an indoor bird room. Thanks for sharing your pictures.
