Aviary Question....

Post by adiekaty » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:55 am

Hello All,
The aviary is finished.... My grandpa did an incredible job!!!! it's 3x3x8.

I have put feeders and branches and greenery inside.... Now it's time for the Zebra's....

We are on our 3rd batch of babies, so I am gonna hold off an the nest for awhile... How lond should I wait?( I wish she would take a long break... However I dont think thats possible...) She always lays a new batch, soon after the others are weened.... I have 2 left from the last batch, and 5 new ones this batch! Oh My.... Lots of Finches here..... We are only keeping the parents and the 2 fawn babies...
Anyhow, Here is my question.... Will they be fine outside and adjust well?( ha ha.... They dont really have a choice)
They have a roof and lots of shade... Will get sun for 1/2 the day...(but can get to a shady spot)

cant fork over the dough.... but what can I add in with them... Checked the species list on what could work... but don't really know personalities on those... I need hardy birds.... Wanted colorful, but may go with Societies? What do you all think would be good?

I know Zeb's aren't on the top Favorite list.... but we love ours and no way can get rid of and start over....

Thanks,
Adrienne

P.S. Liz.... How did the bread turn out?? Do you need more boxes?
Gouldians, Societies, Java's, Spice, Magpie Mannikins and Lovebirds...
Two German Shorthair Pointers, 2 cats, 2 Bearded Dragons, 1 Blue Tongue Skink, aquarium with a betta and 22 koi in a pond out back!!!!
A box turtle and a softshell turtle...
Can I count the husband and 3 kids in here too?

Congrats on the new aviary,Where are you located,if you fill in your profile we will know it makes A lot better when your try to answer questions. If you take out the nest or take eggs when they lay them you won't get more zebs, the only way to stop them.

Zebras will adjust to the outside easier than some species, they are quite hardy. Whether they should go outside just yet depends on where you are located. Finches usually have to acclimate to outdoor conditions, so you want to put them outside when it will stay nice and warm. Most important, they need protection from wind and drafts.

Zebras are in the pushy category, so don't put birds that are in the passive category in with them.

Adrienne!! Where have you been?? I sent you a PM back in January re the boxes of Jiffy - fabulous! I won't need any more for quite a while but thank you SOOO much :!: Did you get my check I sent you?

I agree with Bill - just remove the nest and you will make her take a rest from enlarging the family!!

Thanks everyone..... I am in katy Texas... tried to update profile. Guess I am not doing it correct.

The weather has been nice here... 55-65 at night and today will be 78... I think all of the cold fronts are past by now!

Liz.... Got your check (and cashed it!!!) Thanks....
I have a senior and we have been really busy looking for schools etc.
I also am on other forums and it can get quite busy....

What do you all suggest that should go in with them?
If I start tossing the eggs... Isn't it still hard on mamma? How long should we wait between... This is her3rd batch...

I would definitely remove the nest and toss any eggs she lays in the cage after that. I would make her wait 3 months since she's a Zeb - that should be fine and be sure to give her the eggfood when you put the nest in along with cuttlebone.

Hope you can pop in to our forum a little more often now.

For your Profile information - where it says Location - type in your State, USA and then at the bottom of the page - hit SUBMIT (not "reset" like I've done a few times). That should save your info.

That's it, Donna! You're on the waiting list now for the first babies from this pair! I'm going to run home and put a nest in tonight! (okay I'll drive home - too far to run).
