FINCH NAMES

I don't name my birds... I think b/c I have a lot of them and I would rather call them baby, birdie, honey, etc... is that strange??? lol...

Do you think I need to start naming them?

Also... is anyone annoyed that I keep asking questions about finches?? This is a forum to talk about finches and no one else in my family enjoys talking about them as much as me!

Of course we don't mind! We know exactly how you feel, it's difficult to talk finches with your family while they are rolling their eyes.

I don't name my finches either. Well, once when I was down to only a pair of Zebs, I named them Mr. & Mrs. Zee. Not very creative I know.

My two canary hens are named though... Greta & WeeGee.

And my budgies are Freebird and Casper.

OK, I'm embarrassed to admit this. I don't name the babies I intend to trade or sell, but the other 120+ all have names! It makes record-keeping easier for me, as well as keeping them straight in my head!

How in the world do you keep 120 bird names straight in your head?? I would be totally confused after the first dozen. LOL

I normally don’t name by birds unless they are tame like my cockatiel. I have a hard time coming up with names let alone remembering them. I usually just call my birds "bird" when I am working with them. Not exactly the most creative name in the world.

Yeah... I love finches but couldn't possibly name them all!

Hilary, I too name my birds, although I've only got 32, not 120! My owls are Sonny & Cher, with juvies Elvis & Oscar. I don't name the babies till they have been out of the nest awhile. That way I get a chance to see if they have any special traits to set them apart. Also, hopefully if they are males they'll sing so I'll know whether to give a male or female name. When my Florida Fancy zebs were still juvies I tried using names that weren't gender specific, like Birney & Bailey. They both turned out males!

I don't name anything anymore, somehow the birds with names are the first to kick the bucket so I stay away from naming. As soon as it has a name I am too attached. Right now I only have 6 birds with names, my Peahen Aurica, my Ameraucana roosters Silverado, Steel and Ayu and 2 of my Ameraucana hens(Aiko and Bleurette). These are the only from over 30 named birds that have acctually had for 2 yrs or more......

Thats just me though.
If it has a name and you have a bond with it its the first thing to die or whatever......

I only have 8, so naming them has been no problem.
Charlie, Lola, Dora, Chip, Barbie, Pablo, Tyrone and Tasha. Did have one called Diego too, but he died

I don't name my birds, simply because it's already hard enough when one dies. It's taking days, sometimes weeks to get over it. When I would name them, I would be even more attached by them and even more devastated if it dies.
I've only fifteen birds, so it's not a problem to give them different names, but usually when I am talking about them, I call them by their species name and hen or cock. No confusion possible, because I have from one species not more than a pair.

I have one bird with a name, it's a hybrid canary called Kapoets, after his father a Kapoetsensijs (that's dutch)

Hilary, how in the world are you able to remember 120 bird names!

That's a daysjob to feed them and clean their cages!!!

120 birds! I wouldn't name that many.

But I don't have quite that many so I name them.
Kepler is a stargazer (named after an astronomer).
Caruso is my best singer.
Nadia Dedyut (i.e. not dead yet) is the first gouldian finch I managed to keep alive . . . when I first tried keeping gouldians I had trouble finding healthy stock.

hi all
i have in the past named some canaries but only ever named one zebra finch "ollie " he had fallen out of the nest and the quail had pecked him with thier rather sharp beaks so when i found him his top mandible had just about gone.....but i perservered and managed to get some food down his beak via a syringe and some very watered down eggfood mixed with allsorts of vitamins and additives i got him so that when i let him out of the cage he would fly down on to the floor sit on my foot and while i was walking around getting his food ready he would do that zebra thing where they lay down with thier heads touching the floor and squawk he would hop up the stairs as he was not a good flyer and trying to keep his top mandible in line with his bottom one was a constant battle he got used to seeing the nail file come out and me filing his beak then he got to flying and would fly straight on to my shoulder and pick my ears until he got fed...but one morning i got up at 7am and he was dead in his bed he had water and food and was just starting to crack seeds with his redesigned beak there was no reason for it he just died but i have never named another bird since

I have only 6 society finches so I can remember their names yet.
The first four came as a set from PetSmart and as a group I call the "Buttercups" They were doing a singing group performance for a while, the girls chirping back up.
Individually they are Jack, Jerbit, Merith and Nanny.
Luckily I named Merith with a non gender name (in my rather eccentric book) as she ended up a hen instead of a cock.
I got to fawn societies from the humane society and named them Marlow and George. George was originally Little Butts since he had no tail feathers but when I finally heard him sing I could put a real name on him. He keeps his tail feathers daintily short these days.

It is fun to hear the various names.

For me the trick is picking names that either mean something or going with a series I can remember. My first zebra hens are Laverne, Shirley, Rachel, Phoebe and Monica. My little button quail whose butt plugged up constantly when he was a chick (vent is malformed) is Pluggy. My first 8 swees I named after all of the characters in the Rocky Horror Picture Show (Brad, Janet, Columbia, Eddie, Riff Raff, Magenta, Frankie and Rockie. My first three "male" societies are John, Paul and Ringo (and two turned out to be hens!).... It's fun to think of something that has a meaning so I'll actually remember!

Watch out - you can end up with a BUNCH of birds too! It's too easy to say "ah, just one more can't hurt". "Gosh, I can fit one more cage in somewhere!" "Am I crazy? I'm sure LOTS of people have, um, several finches...."
