Still Confused?

Post by adiekaty » Thu Mar 26, 2009 8:16 am

Hi.... It's the pesty question asker again.....

The societies are now in the aviary with the Zebra pair... All are well and seem to have bonded quickly.

I am still trying to figure the sex on the societies, so after about an hour of observation... I am still confused.... Not sure when you guys say the male will "sing"? Is that the cricket sounding noise? IF so, what do the females do? I have searched the internet fora clip of their song, but haven't found anything...

Anyhow, the one I thought was a male may not be cause my male Zebra got on his back.....HMMM..... that was strange... Does that mean it's a female for sure or was the male confused for a moment and just excited we got new birds?

Two of the societies got a piece of nesting in their mouth and pranced around a little on a branch and shook ther tail feathers...Is that a male trait? Or both?
The third is shy and quiet... So I think she's the female...

Thanks for listening to me ramble... I just wish I knew what they were....

The male Society will dance with a piece of string in his beak and once he sings - you will know it! :) The female is the cricket sounding one.

The Zeb's getting on top of the Society is probably just showing his dominance and probably has nothing to do with whether the Society is a male or female - could be either.

Good luck!

Both male and female will chirp, but when the male sings, you will know it. He will stretch up tall, puff out his chest, and you will see his beak moving as he sings a squeaky little song. He will often look around as he is singing, as if to see if anyone is paying any attention to him.

Both sexes will carry nesting material, so that is not an indication. Also, one being quiet does not necessarily mean it is a female. The only sure indicator of hens is when they lay eggs. And just because a bird mounts another, it could be two males, not unusual.

Ok.... Thanks.

Guess I will sit out back and enjoy the birds after I get the kiddos off to school...
Maybe I just need to watch more closely... Do the males have the cricket sound too?

Is there a site where I can hear the male sing?
Tried youtube... no good...

Thanks again...

I have only noticed my female doing the "cricket" call. All the males have a very different song and don't sound like each other but you'll know it's him as he puffs up his head and stands real tall and just belts it out to the world... honest! Go grab a cup of tea.

As far as my pair the female is the only one that makes the cricket sound. I've never heard either of my males make that sound. They both have a lovely song but very different. Like Liz said they stretch their necks out and the feathers around the head get all puffy, it's very cute! lol! You will know soon enough. Sounds like you have at least one female society :)

Ok... Looks like two females and a male....YEAH!!!!

The cricket sounds from the girls.... The male stands on the perch and looks pear shaped (although his legs aren't standing real tall) gets excited and makes a jumbling of warbles? With his beak open alot of the time.... Is that what you call it?

Guess that sounds like a male to me... He isn't real loud, just sounds different from the others..
What do ya'll think?
Thanks again...

Do you know how old they are? If they are babies or still young they might just be practicing. I know with my last babies I saw one of them starting to sing a bit but he was very low and didn't have it down yet. The adult males are much louder and longer tune. Once you see and hear it's very odvious. It was very cute to watch the baby practice and I wish I had some bands at the time. The males do chirp but they don't sound like crickets like the females do.

Your description of pear shaped is just right. He looks fluffy and fat on the bottom, with his head held as high as he can. It's a funny squeeky kind of song.

I had societies years ago, and I thought they both chirped a bit like crickets normally. But only the male did that little puffed up "full of self importance" song and dance routine. :D Enjoy them. Societies are great!

Anyhow,
Like I said the pics are wonderful... Keep up the great work!
Adrienne

I am enjoying the societies.... They are really cute, different personalities from the Zeb's...

Just glad everyone is getting along..

Thanks AdieKaty. I'm obviously horse crazy, since that's about all I paint now. Wish I had one stil. I'm not allergic to them, but just can't afford to keep one anymore. So I satisfy my horse craving by painting other people's horses. :D

Update.... I have a male and 2 females....

Now that the boy picked his gal... I feel bad for the left out girl... I am waiting/looking for a crested male... Hopefully the bird store will get one soon....
They always have a great selection....

They are building a nest... I have 4 nest in there and the silly societies are putting it on the aviary floor... Is that weird or normal?
The aviary is on a 3 foot stand, so really it's not the ground, just the bottom of the cage...

I have several different types of nest, guess they don't like them...
Any ideas?

Meanwhile the Zeb's are laying eggs again... (4th time) so I am going to remaove them next week... The male Zeb built an incredible nest in the silk plants.... It's quite festive... Once he ran out of nesting material... we started putting other stuff in ther.. Of course he has used it all!!!

Purple feathers from my daughter's drees up Boa, left over silver tinsel for stuffing goodie bags....and various sizes of silk leaves... Problem is... Now he is on nest #3.... I suppose he is O.C.D....

We are having fun watching all of them though.... You can sooooooo get addicted....

BTW... adopted a pair of keets at Petco last week... They are sooo cute....
have them in the 30x18x18. They are lovin it... The cage that the people had them in was about 10x10. Very sad...They can stretch out now...

Thanks for all the input....
