As I mentioned in my first post in this thread: real natural branches are better for birds to have healthier beaks and feet. Real branches vary in size a little and condition their feet when they are perching and when they wipe their beaks on them.

Dowels that come with a lot of cages are not comfortable for their feet and do not condition their beaks. Natural is best.

Most of the dowel perches that are provided with cages are too big for finch feet. Cage makers don't seem to realize that there are pet birds smaller than a parakeet. Branches are much more natural, with different widths, little bumps and gnarls, and those all exercise their feet more. And taking out the middle perch gives them more flying room. Parakeets need room to climb, finches need room to fly.

The perches that cages come with are made of dowels--smooth, round rods.
