stacked cages, how high?

I'm sitting here with a tape measure and trying to figure out how many cages I can stack. But I'm stuck at how high can I reasonably go?
Example, do I stack 3 (54in) or 4 (72in) of the 30x18x18 cages.

I'm thinking that the top cage may have to be a "look but don't work" cage, as the access would be difficult. Example, to look in the nest of the top cage, I would need a ladder.

But maybe that is good for some species like gouldians.

For those of you with stacked cages (Tiffany, Candice, etc) how does the top cage work? Is is visible, how do you work it, etc.

Hi Gary!

As you may be able to tell from my site, my breeder cages are stacked 4 high.
I think it depends on your ceiling height but ultimately I think 4 is the limit and also depends on your agility/mobility in terms of access.
I have a small two-step stepladder that I need anyways because I have my two 3'x6'x2' flights joined together as well - so the top is about 7' or so off the ground and I typically hang millet from the ceiling of the flights so when I change it, I need the step ladder.

Considering I am a measly 5'4" I don't find it too hard to navigate around my bird room - but checking nests on the top breeder cage is certainly a bit more laborious and I reserve that cage for pairs that I know are more tolerant to nest checks.
It was not even in use up until a few weeks ago, because if I have the lower cages I will use them first.
It's definitely visible though :)

Tiffany I am 5'4" also, so your ability to access the cages will be the same as for me.

I have a 2 step footstool and 4 step ladder that I have handy. I can reach the feed cups to refill with no problems...but the rest like nest checks ....I get the step stool or ladder....
One thing I recommend is to get some zip ties and strap the bottom of 1 cage to the top of the next on the back and sides. Also zip tie the cages to the stand... they will not wobble or tip over if you roll them around. These are easily remove when you want to move the cage, just snip them with your nail trimmers.
I can see the birds in the top cages with no problems unless they are on the floor of the cage eating millet.

I agree about the zip ties - they are an inexpensive way of preventing what could be a disaster!
