I have nest in my aviary. At one time I took them all down except for one and I left it up for my owls . They were so lost without it. I know they all say that birds do not need a nest.... and they don't But my pair of owls would look and look for their nest at roosting time. So what I did was take it down during the day and put it back up for them right before time they would go to roost.
Sorry.... I spoil my birds.

Definitely don't bother with nests if you don't want babies. They will still find a nice place to roost and stake a claim to the best spot. And less worry about squabbles over who gets a nest... and no eggs, or at least no incubating of eggs.

Finches really don't need nests to sleep in.
I keep 2 societies, 4 orange cheeks, 2 shafttails, and a silverbill in my aviary and they all seem happy roosting on the plastic plants I've provided high up the aviary. I did provide nests before since the lady I bought the shafttails from said they needed it (they are quite young) but they're doing fine without any.
I often find eggs on the aviary floor (Societies, I bet) and I just discard them. Nests would definitely stimulate them to breed.

I agree with everyone else. Finches don't NEED nest to sleep in.
But...... I have an aviary and have always had nest. I tried taking them all down at one time, but...... my birds which are used to having a nest did not adjust very well. My owls and society finches sleep in a nest every night along with my shaftail.
They don't need, but they sure are happy when they have one.
We don't need a bed.... .we can sleep on a couch. But don't you love a nice bed?
