Zebra Colour - Update July 6 Pics

I bet you thought this would be easy:

I have a female that is pied fawn. Her mate is pied and what I would call a 'chocolate' back lol.

I cannot find a definite name for this mutation - most mutations make the back a lighter colour, but his is a dark brown.

All chicks from them have either been 100% white, or pied 'chocolate'. They have another clutch of 5 with the first hatching today so hopefully I can add more pics in a few weeks.

I can't help you with the name of this mutation, but you might want to contact Garrie Landry at www.zebrafinch.com or Roy Beckham at www.efinch.com. They have both done a lot of work with Zebra mutations. Lovely birds, BTW.

Guess this mutation is one of their favorites games over there and they have a couple genetic experts (including Garrie and Roy) who should be able to help you out.

Saw your post on the Yahoo forum. Sorry I forgot to mention how arrogant they can come across as. Sometimes you have to press them a little bit. When I posted pics of our Phaoes, they tried to quickly dismiss the little guys as regular Florida Fancies. After I prodded them a little I was able to get a more thorough explanation.

Their suggestions are getting a little more complicated lol.

The birds are definitely the colours in the photos, no tricks of the light - unfortunately all the offspring are sold so I can't take any more photos of them but there's one chick in the nest right now, will take a few weeks before it's fully feathered though.

I think since the brown didn't necessarily jump out at you in the pictures, everyone was quick to dismiss it as a typical normal gray pied. That's why I wanted to emphasize that specific feature. Dutch Fawn, huh? That's a new one. Never heard of that mutation before. Definitely cool looking.

I have my settings at "no email" so I don't get to see the attachments - would you be able to post it here or email it to me?

I tried looking up Dutch fawn but found nothing.

Do birds that are split for fawn show some brown in them? How else would they know if he were split for fawn - the brown chicks??

LOL this is just making me more confused - I knew it wouldn't be an easy answer.

Thanks for the pic. The Dutch fawn sure is a close match - definitely darker than the regular fawn.

Glad it worked for you. Whatever the case, they both are beautiful birds. Not sure how you could access them, but there have been pictures of some spectacular birds posted on that forum as of late. No idea how they are getting all these different mutations out of Zebras. Three quarters of which I've never even heard of before. Gary just posted a picture sent to him from a gentleman from the Philippines that showed a beautiful black cheek black face male along with a black face black cheek CFW male. Absolutely stunning birds.

On most of these Yahoo groups, you can't see the pictures if you get 'daily digest', you have to get individual emails. It is a pain, though, because then you are inundated with a kazillion emails--the daily digest is so much better. I think they are working to correct this, so you could see photos on daily digest, I hope so.
