Yes he is beautiful! Is a scarlet chested the same as a Splendid Parakeet? Well, he looks splendid.
Look at us taking over a finch forum with photos of our parakeets!
Mine is a yellow red chested mutation (lutino only have yellow and white as colours).
I recommend Neophemas to anyone who wants to add something different to their finch collection. They also eat the same food. They do need a lot of flying space, so only really aviary birds. Do you agree?

She is very pretty. Yes we are talking about our keets.... but it is about how well they get along with our FINCHES
Sally may move this to OFF-TOPIC...you can post other pics of your birds there...I would love to see more
They do best in aviaries, but I have some in cages and they are 8 years old. I have know many people to keep them as caged birds. But like our finches they really thrive in an aviary setting with plenty of room to fly.
Mine eat alot more foods than the finches, they can handle sunflower seed, safflower seed, buckwheat, cashews, peanuts, etc. Also dried fruit, fresh fruit, veggies, greends, small millets, canary grass seed, eggfood..... the only thing I haven't seen them eat is mealworms.
These birds are very quiet... they make less noise than my finches.
And yes these are the same as splendids...we call them Scarlet Chested Grasskeets here
A piar just finishing up their molt.

Oh wow! I must admit I'm jealous! I think Splendids look even more beautiful than Turquoisines. Unfortunately I cannot get any spendids now as they would hybridise too easily. Even the female has very delicate yet beautiful colours.
You are right about live food, they seem to be as interested as you and I in a plate of white wriggling larvae.
I don't have any nice photos to share here yet, but I'll take some at the weekend when I'll be getting 3 Gouldian boys so you can also see the what the aviary looks like. I can't wait to have some Gouldian finches again!

What a lot of people call parakeets are really budgies. Budgies are quite aggressive and when breeding can kill other birds. Some of the true parakeets are very gentle birds...most all of the neophemas are very gentle...even during breeding. The rosey bourke is one of the most peaceful of all but they have eyes that have adapted to seeing quite well in the dark. Since this makes them semi active at night they can scare the roosting finches and so they don't always make a good mix.

Good explanation Candace but I'd argue that budgies are also true parakeets.
Alec - cockatiels are fine with finches, my only concern is the size of the wings. When they fly they may make finches nervous, which may be a prob when nesting.
Lovebirds are a huge no no! They are very territorial and have very strong beaks, they are fast and agile flyers. finches wouldn't stand a chance.
Neophemas or lineolated are the only type of hook bills that in my opinion can live very well with all type of finches.
