Never seen this before...HELP
Hi again. I have a male zebra finch who has developed... well, a case of the runs. I have never seen anything like it before. They almost come spraying out. And in large amounts. I've even seen him sort of squat when he poops. But it is A LOT. I've noticed this for 2 weeks now. There isn't much solid mass to the droppings, they look milky white. Here is the strange part. He shows absolutely no other sign of illness. He is very active, happy, eats well, no puffiness, no sleepyness, no messy vent, NO indication he is sick. Another strange thing I find about this is that he and his mate go through 3 to 4 times as much water as all of my other zebras. (I use the tubes that attach to the sides of the breeding cages and I know for sure they are not trying to bath in it or anything like that.) This pair simply goes through a LOT of water. So, are the runny poops because of the large amounts of water? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I am no "poop" expert, but I do not think it is because of dirnking the excessive amount of water.
It appears they may have some kind of problem. Birds can really hide their illnesses.
I would give them some extra heat, nv powder if you have any to replace electrolytes and if not some use watered down gatorade.
Hopefully someone else will have some advice for you.
Good luck!

I neither am any sort of expert. But I would imagine that the water intake is probably because of the runs, and not the cause. Like any living creature I would imagine that liquids have to be replaced.
If at all possible follow Donna's directions, as he is probably hiding an illness.

A bird with diahrrea has some sort of problem going on. It is odd that it has been going on for two weeks with the birds still appearing normal in other ways. Is it possible that you are giving lots of veggies? Too many veggies can cause runny poop without it being an illness.
Another way you can supply electrolytes is with unflavored Pedialyte.

Sally-- I haven't been feeding him veggies since I noticed the runs. And I've given him Guardian Angel. It's the strangest thing. He still appears to be totally normal and healthy. But the poop comes out in LARGE amounts and comes out with force and is very wet. (Sorry for the gross description). I don't know what else to do for him. He is inside, comfortable, and is as happy as a clam. I wouldn't suspect anything is wrong with the guy except for when I see him poop.Sally wrote:Is it possible that you are giving lots of veggies?
