Is this a sign of something wrong?

Post by lovemyfinch » Wed Jul 08, 2009 7:46 am

I have noticed that for the last 2 days my hens excrements have been much larger than normal. I am wondering and worrying if I should be treating her for something. Remembering that she is sitting on one lonely egg, that has proven to be fertile. She has been eating, drinking and acting normal, it is just that her''poo'' seems extremely big.

Attached is a picture, I know it's gross but nonetheless necessary.

That's a PERFECT "preggy" poop, Janine!! That's what I call them - it's because they are in the nest longer and 'hold it' longer. So when they do come out - they have larger poops - accumulated more over time.

YAY - it's a good sign!! Go little egg!! [-o<

"Preggy Poop" I think I will adopt that term :D This is always a good sign that the hen is sitting 'tight' (or male...I have seen the father do much of the incubating and the same thing happens)

Now I feel a little silly though.

The first preggy poop that I saw was the day after she laid her first egg(recalling that I said she was already sitting, she even slept in there that first night). I thought it was an egg without a shell. #-o

Couldn't also this poop come not from just sitting in the nest and holding it longer, but from having been backed up with the egg in her system. I usually see monster pooooos like this just after an egg getting laid in the AM.
Goulds, Owls, Gold Breasts, Stars, Zebras, Societies
An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

Yes, most definately. The egg makes it almost impossible to poop. That is why many times an eggbound hen will die. Not just from exhaustion but from toxins not being passed from her system.

I love the term 'preggy poop'! It is so descriptive--perfect!
