Birdie Cornbread

Post by pattiej » Thu Jul 09, 2009 11:22 pm

I found some recipes on the internet for baking bread for finches using a box of Jiffy Cornbread mix , now some recipes I've come across say to add 12 eggs some less, some add veggies or seeds or wheat germ and also egg shells, they all very a bit. I was thinking of baking some for my birds, Just wondering if any of you have a egg food or egg/cornbread recipe that you make for your finches that you could share.

Thanks! :D

This is a good one. I don't know how to link, so go to this site, look under Care, then Diet, and there are instructions for bird bread.

I finally found a mix for cornbread muffins (Liz, we can get it at Loblaws/Maxi/Safeway in the organic food section)

I baked some muffins today,(being as how the temps are finally getting hot, and I'm worried that the eggfood will turn too quick). For oil I used codliver, added fruitipate orlux dried eggfood, wheatgerm oil, omega 3-6-9, prime, and figured what the heck some organic apple sauce. Birdies are having a feast. I think I have successfully become thier favorite chef.

This site has several really good, some organic, some sugar free recipes:

http://www.parrothouse.com/recipes.html
........................................................................................
The next site has recipes for parrots, hookbirds and smaller birds
I included a sample of 2 of the recipes you will find on:

http://www.upatsix.com/faq/recipes.htm

Easy Egg food
3 boiled eggs and shells
1/2 c. Bag O' Bugs
1/2 c. Petamine
Mash eggs and shells well with a fork. Add Bag O' Bugs and Petamine and combine. Store unused portions in the refrigerators.

Birdy Bread - sent to EXOTIC-L courtesy of Frank D. Jackson
2 eggs
1 c. milk
1/4 c. vegetable oil
1-1/2 c. self-rising corn meal
1 c. flour
4 grated carrots
1 c. cooked rice
1 c. finely chopped broccoli
1 spoonful of canary birdseed
1 c. cooked pasta
1 small jar each of:
spinach
green beans
yams
peas
squash
carrots
(all of these are made from only the vegetable listed with no sugar or preservatives added)
Preheat oven to 450°F, combine all ingredients, sprinkle oatmeal on top of batter after it is in the pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Bread can be cut in the appropriate size pieces and frozen until needed (be careful of freezer burn, though).

.....................................................................................
I think I may try this one on http://www.sunnyhollowaviaries.com/recipes.htm

Birdie Pumpkin Bread

1 can of organic pumpkin or sweet potato puree(15 oz)
4 oz yogurt
1/2 cup applesauce (instead of oil)
Some ground flax seed
1 whole egg (including shell)
1/4 cup of mango or carrot juice
2+ TBL quinoa
Mixed un-sulphured dried fruits and raw sunflower seeds (I would finely grind this)
About 2 cups Arrowhead Mills Organic Cornbread mix-enough to make a stiff batter

EXTRA Nutrition: If you have a juicer, add the pulp from a carrots or other great veggies. Other items can be added, just adjust texture using more mix or liquid. Almond Milk is just as good as mango juice.

Bake about 30 minutes @ 375 degrees
Freeze in sections, keep 2-3 days worth fresh.
