Finches died suddenly

Post by faerieorchid » Fri Jul 31, 2009 2:45 pm

About a week ago i bought 2 society finches. They were doing very well and seemed happy. However I woke up this morning to find them dead. One was in the nest and the other in the food dish. They showed no signs of being sick. What could have happened?

Did they have seed or just the hulls from the seeds. Many times it appears they have food but on closer examination, it is just the shelled hulls of the seeds in the dish. They may have starved.

Water? Could of been fumes from an aresol can, paint, bug spray, etc????

So sorry for your loss.

A hundred different reasons unfortunately...there are just so many possibilities.Stress when birds are being moved can sometimes kill but there is no way of telling in this case....sorry.

They ate all the time. I even bought this food that has fruit and vegtables to go along with the finch food I bought. I gave them water from the brita filter on the sink. I havent done any paitning or used any spray cans around them. After cleaning the cage obviously should i try to get more? Would it also be okay to just get one at first see how it does then later on get anouther one? I don't want to buy 2 and have same thing happen again.

I have 3 actually but the cage is 5 feet off the floor hanging from the ceiling. They only sit and watch from underneath. Talked to the pet store and theirs are fine. The store actually replaced them for me but with zebras instead of society's, they didn't have anymore society's. We are taking all kinds of precautions this time. We did remember we had used air freshener the other day and a glade plugin.

Aerosol air fresheners (or any aerosols, for that matter) could have caused the birds to die. I don't use any of those plug-in air fresheners, either, think they are about as bad. Once you have birds, you have to watch about what cleansers, sprays, chemicals that may be harmful to them.

And the other thing is what Candace already mentioned--the seed cup appears full, like they have plenty, but they have eaten the seed and left the hulls, so there is actually nothing left for them to eat.

Agreed.

I have finches and dogs (who lie all over the floor, lick floors etc). I'm a firm believer that everything can be cleaned and deoderized with plain old white vinegar and water. Keeps my mirrors shiny and my wood floors gleaming! And has no adverse affects on animals.
