Gouldian hen: Can't sing?

Post by FINCHIE » Sat Aug 01, 2009 8:11 pm

I recently obtained 3 birds with a cage I bought. They all had ASM, so I treated with Moxidectin, and then retreated 3 weeks later! Two of them (hen and cock) can sing well now. However the other hen still can only manage a very faint muffled "tweet tweet".

I have treated her with a drop of Ivermectin and still no improvement in her voice? It has been over 2 months since I got her, and 2 weeks since her last treatment.

She is 100% healthy other than her voice, flies around her cage 24/7 and is eating and drinking normally. All feathers in 100% condition

She does have a faint ticking still, which to me suggests ASM, but I dont think treating her again with Moxidectin or Ivermectin will do anything?

I have never heard this bird ever sing normally, could it just be some respiratory issue or do you think its still ASM? I want to move her in to the aviary but dont want to do so if there is a risk that she will infect the other Gouldians?

Sorry about the long winded post, any comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :D

Only the male gouldians can sing. I have never had a female gouldian that could sing and i never heard of anyone else having a female that could sing. Are you sure you dont have 2 males and a female?

When I mean sing I mean the returning call the hen makes to the male when he calls to her . The returning call consists of two short "tweet" "tweets".

Sometimes the dead ASM can cause an infection of the airways...but if she is eating and acting well then probabaly not. Sometimes the ASM can cause enough damage that it is permanent.
A hoarse whisper if at all.

Interesting, thanks for that! I have now paired her up with another bird and she is ecstatic!, Keeps following him around everywhere!

Thanks for your posts! :D
