Sick birds with babies!!

Post by FinchFan09 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 3:18 pm

I have a pair of Zebras who I just noticed are having diarrhea. There vents are messy and the dropping are clearly not normal. Problem is they have a clutch with 4 babies in it that are about 10 days old. What should I do? Can I treat with antibiotics while they are feeding the babies?

If you can describe more precisely (colours? any undigested seeds in it?) or post a pic of their feces - it would be helpful.

Are they acting and eating/drinking as normal? Are they fluffed and just sitting on a perch? Are they still feeding the babies? Do the babies have normal eliminations (in the nest)?
What are the parents eating? Fruits can cause loose/watery droppings.

I think these need to be answered before rushing to use antibiotics.

Liz,
I would describe the droppings as mostly white and very loose. No undigested seed that I can see. Also, no fruits in their diet. And no change in diet.

I noticed the female's wings are drooping somewhat today and she looks puffy. Although both are active and carrying on like normal. Also, babies are being well fed and taken care of.

I personally do think I would give any antibiotics at this point. Maybe try some THRIVE on soaked seeds or some NV powder in their water.

Donna - I think you meant to say you would NOT give any anitibiotics at this point. I agree with trying to use Thrive or NV powder first.

Finchfan09 - Do you know for sure if it is one or both parents with the loose stools? If it is just one, then I would separate that one out and treat that one - leaving the other to take care of the babies. If it's both parents (if you are sure) then you'll need to treat both.

Anyone else have other possible suggestions?
Liz

Some veggies like lettuce can give loose droppings--are they getting lots of veggies? If so, you could cut back and see if that helps.
