a ASM question

Post by carmena » Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:38 am

Right before I treated my birds for mites I was noticing some very very small black flecks in their water in the morning when I would change the water.
Where these ASM??? Do they come out when the birds drink???
They didn't look like dirt but if I had a magnifier I am sure there where little legs on them. Super TINY
or am I NUTS????
Have Gouldians and societies and fledglings of all of the above!!

Mites are microscopic and you won't see them without a microscope. What you saw in the water was most likely bits of the seed and/or seed husks.

Not all of them are microscopic :/
Blood mites are visible with the naked eye, and ASMs can be seen by transilluminating the trachea - they look like little black dots moving around.
I'm sure a microscope would give you a better look at them, but they're not always totally necessary... scary, really!

If you put a white t-shirt over the cage at nite,in the morning you would see the mites on it.
