I've only had my canary for about a month now, but since I got him, all the things on the farm are starting to get ready for harvest. Anyway, he's gobbled the cucumber like it was going out of style, and seems fond of broccoli.
Anyway - I haven't found anything against this, but I've been wondering, are tomatoes and corn okay to give to him? He seems more than willing to try anything I give him, but I'm worried that I might upset his stomach or worse. Also, what are the best fruits to give him? I've been playing it safe with apples so far, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind a bit of variety in his diet. ^-^

If you go to the Finch Information Center, linked at left, look under Nutrition, and there is an article there about Safe, Toxic, and Unsafe Foods.

My finches won't eat broccoli but they love cucumber.

Re: Fresh foods...?
Thanks for the heads-up. ^-^ I learned a lot. (As did my fiancee who was leaning over my shoulder the entire time.)
I just looked over that list and didn't see anything about zuccini or yellow squash. u.u; I imagine its all right, considering pumpkin and winter squash are on the list...yes? Hopefully?
Anyway, I just put a slice of tomato and some corn in the cage. North went wild and started flinging corn everywhere and nibbling at the tomato.
This little canary is a bold fellow! After having budgies for so long, its so strange how bold he is! They'd stare at the new food and avoid the part of the cage the new food was in; North dives at it and immediately starts picking it apart with zest!

Re: Fresh foods...?
I think Canaries are known to be good eaters. I've read some people keep canaries in with their finches in hopes that thier eating habits wear off on them ;)
My Canary eats everything and anything I give him
He's a pleasure to feed ;)

Be careful with the apples.. the seeds are poisonous to canarys. But I core them carefully. My canaries and finches love cucumber, broccoli/carrot slaw and go wild for zuchinni.
