Hi Donna,

He doesn't need to eat them to necessarily become infected.
Simply by the other birds eating them and defecating, he can come into contact with their eggs or cysts if he comes into contact with contaminated poo.

I am not a huge fan of mixing meds, so I would continue with the Ronex (protozoa can cause diarrhea as well) and see if you see any improvement first.
If not, I would do the wormer (it is only a one time, one day treatment) and if you still see issues, the abx I would recommend to try (and I think Misty would agree with me here) is Trimethoprim Sulpha or a derivative like MedPet's 4-in-1 which tackles everything TMS does and then some.

If you medicate be sure to remove the charcoal. It will keep the medication from working.

Thank you so much for that offer Tiffany. I talked with Misty last night and she has some and I will get it today. I have decided to start him on that and remove the Ronivet. The reason being..... the whole flock has been treated with that recently. I am going to worm them today, and start that other tomorrow.

Do you think the worming meds will be okay for the babies too?

Also, I didn't know about the charcoal.

If the bird eats the charcoal while being medicated the charcoal absorbs the meds. Just like when treating fish you need to remove the charcoal from the filter or you waste the medication.

John is right. I used to breed and raise fish for many years and you always remove the charcoal when treating with meds. I stopped using it after awhile with the fish, it's really not necessary but in Gouldians I know it's something they need, but it makes sense while treating to remove it till treatment is over.

Oh Der!! I didn't even think that Misty is in your back yard basically.. lol!

As per the safety question, I specifically asked Bill (Morning Bird owner) about this.
He assured me Worm Away is safe for birds of all ages and in all stages of development (whether they are molting, laying, incubating, have nestlings, etc.)
I have myself used it on birds that have eggs and/or babies, and I have never had any problems.
I can't speak for other worming products, but if they are similar or identical in composition I would presume they would be just as safe.

I used Worm Away just last week for my Societies with the 2 Star and 3 RCCB babies inthe nest - and they are all fine just like Tiffany said. :)

Good to hear. It is in their water as we speak.

Tomorrow I will begin the TMS.

Thank you everyone and I will keep you posted on their health.

BTW... I went ahead and am also treating all birds in the aviary with the Worm meds.

Sorry for all the questions..... I haven't had to treat sick birds often.

After treating with Trimethoprim Sulpha do you need to follow up with a probiotic?

I agree :)

Sometimes I even just go right ahead to the real stuff and use medistatin instead of probiotics just to be safe.

Donna,

It looks like everyone gave good advice. I hope the wormer and TMS do the job. What kind of probiotics do you use for the birds? What brand? I would also take out the charcoal until done treating them with the TMS. Actually I would only offer the seed, miracle meal and the TMS water. This will allow you to look at the poops to see if there is any difference. The babies should perk right up if the TMS is helping - which I'm hoping they will.
