Atlanta Bird Show
I have never been to a bird show, I would like to attend the show coming up in Atlanta, however my brother is getting married the saturday the show is in town, I should be able to make the sunday part of the show though.
What goes on at these shows?
Are prices much better at the shows than normal?

I LOVE going. Some people (breeders) do not like to attend because of the fear of getting sick birds and brining them in to your flock or carrying in some disease. You have to use alot of precautions if doing so.
There are loads of birds, supplies, etc. Yes, you can get things much cheaper there.
I will be going on Saturday morning.

Re: Atlanta Bird Show
Hint - throw a travel cage or two in your car even if you're not planning to buy any birds.
Because you'll see a bunch of breeders you'll probably see a greater variety of birds than you normally have access to. I grab business cards from the breeders I like for future needs (he he he), and take every chance to ask questions and learn. If you are planning to buy keep in mind that (at least at the show I attend) very few/none of the breeders take credit cards and most prefer cash, so plan ahead. If you're there when it opens you'll see the greatest variety of birds, and if you're there at closing you'll get the best prices as breeders try to sell remaining stock.

I would love to attend. I was just wondering why everyone doesn't use Paypal at these events? The monies are transferable immediately and it's safer than carrying a large sum of cash, which is worrisome to me, not so much as I'd get robbed, but more so that I'd LOSE it.
I'm sure there would be a computer available somewhere, to transfer the funds. As a breeder/seller, I wouldn't want to have all that cash on me, either. Food for thought.

Re: Atlanta Bird Show
All the shows I have ever been to take cash only. There are some cage vendors and big outfits that take credit cards. For the most part it is not easily affordable for the small breeder. Paypal as all credit cards charge the seller to use thier services...sometimes more than 4%, plus the charge of processing. And then on top of that the consumer can refuse a charge and then it must be investigated and at least during that time the seller is out the money, if not for good. I had a friend that would tell her card company that if this is not removed from my card then I will just cancel and get a Visa. The MC company removed the charge..... I have no idea if they took the loss or if the merchant did. All I know is that it can be a hassle. When I do sell at a fair I will expect cash. I also will take my counterfit pen with me also
Also my Hubby who will hold the Monies

Re: Paypal..
You would also need to have a computer up and running and with an internet connection :\
Not an easy feat considering coming by electric can occasionally be a pain in the butt for vendors at these things.
You usually have to specially request tables close to outlets, and sometimes are charged a premium.

I've paid with creditcard at the Atlanta bird show. I'm not sure if all bird breeders take it but at least the vendors where I buy supplies do.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Re: Atlanta Bird Show
When I have sold at marts, I have a sign on the front of my table that says 'cash only', and next time I will add 'no checks or credit cards'. I have taken a couple of checks, each time after some discussion with the buyer and getting a good feeling about them, but it is still taking a chance, and I am relieved when the checks don't bounce. Most of the smaller breeder vendors only take cash.
Take Hilary's advice and bring a travel cage or two--you'll be sorry if you don't! Though sometimes you can buy small carriers at the marts. I have some small carriers that I can provide if the buyer doesn't have a travel cage with them, but not all sellers will have something. When I can make up unrelated pairs, I am going to put one pair per carrier, and they will sell as a package--that's the way some vendors do it, and it avoids having to transfer the birds from one carrier to another.
And do be there early if you have a certain species in mind--some of them sell out fairly quickly.

Re: Atlanta Bird Show
It doesn't look like I will be making the September Atlanta fair either. Two of my fawn Owl hens are sitting, and if they have fertile eggs, I might have babies the 17th! I'd be too afraid to be gone just then. Plus I have a hearing on my protest of my property taxes at the same time.
I think the Christmas party sounds like a great idea.

Re: Atlanta Bird Show
I have bought birds 3 times at bird fairs.....been very lucky and have never had a sick bird. I always buy at least 2 and put in isolation for 6-8 weeks. Everytime I have paid by check - had a credit card but they were not set up to take them. I do not buy from those selling many different kinds of finches and have them all in very small cages together.
There are some great people at these fairs and some people with birds that look VERY sick. So be very careful!!!!
I know of a person who bought several Goulds at a fair some time ago because they were very inexpensive and ALL died from illness within days.

Re: Atlanta Bird Show
This is why I like to buy from who I know..... I always go to Floyd's table first thing. He has the best birds, best variety and best prices. He is fair, cares for his birds and always give advice about any new species. Many of the birds I have got from him, he has breed himself and if he didn't breed them he tells me about then. Where they come from, etc.....
I have not seen too many people that I wouldn't buy from, but there are a few...... You just have to do your research and be careful.
Sorry we will miss you this go -round James and Sally. Looking forward to seeing everyone in December. Okay party plannner (James).... get busy.
