New Birds

Just picked these guys up, they were given to by a friend of a friend. A pair of societies 2 years old, the dark one is the female. A green singing finch (if I am doing the translation correctly) 4 years old male. And who would guess - yup another zebra.

Lovely birds! I really like the green singing finches ALOT! They have them here at the local petsmart and I always look at them and watch them, they are not very frightened of humans it seems, at least those there. Also, by the look of it, I think you might have a female but some one more experienced can probably give you a definate answer, I just know that she appears a lot duller than the males I have seen. Good luck with them!!!

The green singer is really calm, he will just sit there and follow my hand as I move it around. Big change from the others. I am going to take the word of the last owner as to his sex, being as how I did not go looking for these birds, she just wanted to get rid of them, and one of my work friends asked me if I would take them. So this being said, she has absolutely no reason to tell me the wrong sex. She did however mention that he is going through his period of the year in which he does not sing. Apparently this happens once a year. I would imagine that it has probably something to do with a molt or something of that sort. Anyway, if the times comes to breed I guess I will find out. For now, I haven't seen anyone selling any singing green finches, and if not, no worry, he will be a sunny pet in my aviary and have a wonderful life with my family.

Love the names
Male canaries go through quiet times. During the molt like you mentioned and off breeding times they don't sing alot. But come spring and especially if there is a feamle to court he will sing like there is no tommorrow.... well at least my male canaries did. I could always tell when it was breeding time by the sound of thier song....

Pretty combination. Certainly have a lot of color there. I am curious as to how well all of them will get along in a cage. On the other hand they seem to do well in an aviary, so why shouldn't they do well in a cage.

Being as how I had already decided to no longer breed my zebras, he will not be getting a name. Yesterday afternoon I shed a few tears when I sold 4 of my zebras. The woman wanted at least one pair that she could breed, so I sold her Eve and Picasso (now they can continue being in love and producing beautiful babies). I will always have the memories and pictures. They had also been separated ever since the last clutch fledged which was 2 months ago. THey were so happy to be back together, that I felt that it was the best decision. She also already had another male and female that were related, so she took Pearl and one of the new boys to partner them with in the future. So having sold 3 that already had names I have decided that from now on any birds that are to be sold will not be named (it breaks my heart - I loved them all). I am now left with 4 boys - which means no more baby zebras.

On a happier note, I just candled Tux's latest clutch (shaftail), there are 7 eggs and at least 5 are fertile.
