Help: Birds in hospital cage are not looking good
Hello,
After moving both of my birds to a hospital cage with a 60w light on, today i noticed that male's situation has become worst. He seems very lazy and can't even fly to the perch and his eyes are closed. I held both birds to my ears and I couldn't hear any clicking noise or maybe they were too low that i couldn't pick them up. Also today i noticed that the female has something popping up from her behind like a pimple or a tumor. I don't know what else to do, can someone please help. My order of s76 still did not arrive and it is hard to find any medication here.
Please check the pictures.

I am so sorry that you are having problems with your birds being sick. There are many different things that could be going on with them..... I do not have alot of experience with diagnosing sick birds, but there are many on here who can give you good advice.
Hopefully someonewill chime in soon.
I hope they get better!

You're doing the best basic things you can by having them in a smaller hospital cage covered with a towel and a heatlamp. If you have finch vitamins, add a little to their water. Adding a millet spray would be okay along with their finch seed.
Re the pimple/tumour on the hen - if it's located on top of her rump - it's most likely her "oil preening gland" and is perfectly normal.
Good luck and please keep us updated.

The preening gland is normal, yes, but that tumor is probably 10x larger than the size of the preening gland, and it's located in the wrong place.
I'm sorry to say but that does NOT look good to me.
I would urge you to consult a vet for that tumor, I feel as though, however, the birds are too small and that tumor too large for it to be operated on without expending the bird in the process.
It might just be one of those situations where you just let sleeping dogs lie until it becomes an issue of quality of life for her.
Did you purchase the birds like these?
The feather condition is not great and they both just look lackluster and blah.. How long have you had them?
I see what you mean about the male, but it is really impossible to offer a suggestion not knowing their history or true condition.
What are his droppings like?
Can you get photos of just his?
Are they watery? Green? Yellow?
Does he have any discharge coming out of his nares or eyes?
How old are the birds?

Re: Help: Birds in hospital cage are not looking good
I just went back and read your previous posts. Are these sick birds part of the 10 you recently bought? Did you have other finches already before buying these 10? If so, did you quarantine the 10 new finches separate from your others? Have you contacted the pet shops where you purchased the birds to let them know about the problems you are having? Did these birds look like this when you bought them?
It's not much help to you now, but when buying birds, you want them to be as healthy as possible, in the best condition possible. Being caged in a pet shop (or anywhere) and then moved to a new home is stressful on any bird, and if they aren't in the best of health, they have trouble coping.

Re: Help: Birds in hospital cage are not looking good
Thanks for the replies. I purchased the finches all around the same time, 1 or 2 days apart. The pooping looks normal to me, nothing weird, colorful or watery. I have had them for around 2 weeks now. I don't remember if this was the condition I bought them at, but I did not inspect them carefully like I should have. I do remember the male never being that active since day one and only sleeping. The female however was fine, until I noticed her features are becoming all ruffled up yesterday. That's when I moved her to the hospital cage and also when I noticed that bump. I am never going to buy a finch again unless i inspect him 100% including grabbing him and listening to his breathing. I guess all I can do now is leave both of them in the cage and see what happens
The tumor thing is not contagious i hope.

Hi Kouma, both birds beaks seem to be crossing, which could be genetic or due to a lack of vitamins. You should trim them at some point it will help with their eating and preening. What are you feeding them and are they molting right now?Any vitamins?

Nice observation. That is true both their beaks are crossing, infact the female has the upper beak much longer than the lower. How do I trim them? I have been recently adding multivitamins to their water which includes vitamin E.cartel wrote:Hi Kouma, both birds beaks seem to be crossing, which could be genetic or due to a lack of vitamins. You should trim them at some point it will help with their eating and preening. What are you feeding them and are they molting right now?Any vitamins?

Re: Help: Birds in hospital cage are not looking good
I just woke up to find my male on the floor helpless dying. I picked him up and put him by my ear and I heard that awful clicking noise. If I have had my S76 shipped earlier I could have saved him. I am assuming also the female has it and probably my complete flock. I am praying to get that S76 today or tomorrow.

Re: Help: Birds in hospital cage are not looking good
Same here. It is so discouraging when these things happen. We just have to learn, and sometimes the hard way, from our mistakes. I know I just recently did. Also it is good to have all medications on hand before sickness strikes. That way you won't have to wait for it to arrive while the bird is getting sicker. So I recommend you get some different meds on hand so this won't happen to you again. Good luck. I hope the rest of the birds pull through.lovemyfinch wrote:So sorry to hear of thisI do hope that you are able to treat the reswt of your flock before it is too late.
