Gouldian chicks coloring up

Post by CandoAviary » Thu Sep 17, 2009 1:07 am

I always love the chicks at this stage. Every day you can see a change, patches of colors giving away their beauty.
My first blue and one of the /blue

My handfed blue

One of 2 others just showing a little purple on the belly and still the steel blue wings

A really big gouldian

And some of one group

And this fellow not showing much color but has a song to die for. He is just singing away here

Some of the orange heads

Some of the brightest orange I've ever seen coming out

And my weird yellow/red eyed chick (no longer red)
It is developing yellow high on the head but wings not so much. Is developing YH PB (also the center bird in the above picture.)Sitting behind it is the back of a normal yellow chick.

Candace your birds look fantastic. You are really blessed to have so many of them hatch and survive! What will you do with all of them? Take them to a bird mart? Oh, I also wanted to know if you have a OH white breast yellow back. I am crazy for that mutation but I have such a hard time finding one! :D

I do not own a single white breast  I plan on changing that in the future. I was just sticking to the red heads, black heads normals until I mastered the breeding part for them. Also I had 1 piar of yellows. The red heads threw 1 orange head female so I bread it with a orange head dilute from my yellow pair... thus the orange heads. Then they threw a blue...was I surprized,,,didn't even know they were split for blue. So I have been busy trying to sort what I have out before I add white breast to the mix. I do have lilac breast though so I really need some white breast. I am looking for OH and RH white breast females. I have had 41 chicks this season so far from 7 pair. I set up 18 pair to breed(most from the offsprings I bred last year)... Some have not even started to lay. Some are not the least bit interested. Some have started to molt so the nest box has been removed. Some are on eggs as we speak.
I plan on trying my hand at a bird fair. There is one in Pensacola in Feb. Muight be too cold and too early. One in late May in Tallahasse. They should be colored out and ready to go by then.
I also plan on furnishing the zoo here with some. I think everyone should see these birds and they don't have any.
In the mean time I will enjoy them.

Wow what an awesome idea to give some to your local zoo. I agree, most people have no idea what a gouldian is and they will be astonished at such an exotic looking bird. Little do they know they were bred a few miles away. Did you breed anything other than gouldians this season?

Goldbreast waxbills(12 chicks?), red throated parrot finches (10 on perch, others in nest), a few zebras (6... just set some up. Had sexes seperated), and 3 cute crested societies:D

Beautiful chicks Candace! I know you were thrilled to see that blue. Sunshine is split to blue.... but so far none have been produced. That is so exciting for you!!

Wow Candace, Congrat's on your abundance of
babies this year. That just goes to show when they are in ideal settings and are happy, they will come through, well not for us but sure makes us feel like we are doing something right :)

Those blues are to die for!! and the yellows too!
