Breeding Cages

I want to buy my first breeding cage and have been looking online. I see some on Amazon and was wondering what the best size would be?
24x16x16w or 30x18x18w? Thanks

I would definitely go with the 30x18x18. You have to figure that you start with 2 birds in there, but then you have to add in however many babies they might have in one clutch--say 4-6, and now you have 6-8 birds in one cage till the babies are weaned. To me, the ideal breeding cage would be 48x24x24, but that takes up a lot of space (plus you'd have to build your own, as I don't see that size for sale in the US, at least in my price range). And I would recommend dividable cages, as it sure helps when you are trying to catch those little babies.

I only use 24x16x16 as quarantine cages, or that is the size I take to the marts, as I can put in the divider and have hens on one side, and cocks on the other. They are too small IMO for breeding cages.

Depends on what kind of birds you are breeding. I breed most of my goudians and zebras in this size cage. I also have the 30" x 18" with pairs. Both preform equally. However this cage is too small if you plan on leaving the chicks in for any length of time. I remove the chicks within a couple of weeks. My goldbreast, parrot finches and others would never work too well in either of these. My zebras and gouldains are so calm that they works well. However when they are not paired and in breeding mode they are housed in flights or aviaries. Very important that they get their exercise.

Most people keep their birds in the same cages year round...so they aren't really breeding cages that they have...it is living cages that they have. In that case the larger the better. but if you use them for breeding, well that is what they were designed for, thus the name breeding cages
