Little Gold Breast update

Post by cindy » Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:01 pm

Since I lost one of our little Gold Breast male a couple of weeks ago I have been watching the 3 remaining (1 male, 2 females). The first few days the lone female was sleeping eating by herself. Now after all 3 preen each other, the 2 females sit together. All 3 nest together, eat together. They are very sweet little birds. I will be getting 1 more male and another pair soon.

I plan on redoing the large flight with silk cherry blossoms and oak branches, new nests. I will introduce the 6 birds to a new cage set up after the 3 new birds are done with quarantine.

The little female is the one in the middle of the pair. They both preen her at the same time. She is a bit tinier than the other female.

I just did a cage for my fires I am waiting on with grape vines. I bought 2 with green grapes and 2 with red grapes. They really are pretty.

Don't you love adding silks, vines and leaves to the cages. They know me at the local Pier 1. When I am at the clearance section of silks they all ask..."Are you buying for your birds again?".

My answer..."Of course!"

John, when you get your birds please post a picture of them & your cage set up. Can't wait to see.

This post makes me want Goldbreasts even more. No matter what way you put it, birds that are friendly are much more likable than birds that aren't. That's the only thing I dislike about gouldians is their cold personalities towards other birds.

So cute! I love seeing mine sit on a little swing together.

They seem to just LOVE each other. I am getting ready to set up a pair of society finches in my classroom at school. I love the idea of cherry blossoms. Hobby Lobby here I come...... =D>

I have a question. Do you think it would be ok to take the 3 GB and give them temporary living quarters in a 30 x 18 breeder cage? I would like to set up the larger flight 38w x 22d x 36 high with new silks, nest, branches.

I would return them and the new male and new 3rd pair (after quarantine) to the cage with a new set up so they can establish new territories vs adding 3 new birds to the already existing cage set up.

Opinions please....

I quarentined my 5 pair of goldbreast in that size cage for 6 weels. They did fine. I even put 2 canarynest in with some cocfiber just for a resting place from the perches....they tried to build nest.... Later when I moved them to thier aviary I gave them closed nest and they went to breeding.
The 10 little birds in the 30" cage didn't even look crowded. I would imagine you could breed a pair in this with no problems if you wanted.

Thanks everyone. They are so tiny and they all hang out together. I am going to gently transfer the 3 to a breeder cage and get working on their new remolded home...

Candace how are your little GB doing?

They are doing good. Hanging out with the big kids... yesterday I finally got the ladder and climbed up to check nest. I figured I would see if any small fledglings were in them...trying to figure out why so many were falling to their deaths. I think I found the answer. The goldbreast had stripped the bamboo leaves and built up the nest to the nest opening  Those little chicks were probably rolling out  I took them down...pulled the nesting material out to a proper level...added a little fresh and rehung. 3 nest had eggs so I left them and just hope that those do not roll out. I removed the bamboo. Oh the lessons we learn the hard way. I had added plants thinking it was for the best :?

Candace, the beautiful pink silk orchids I placed in the St Helena's cage are being shredded. I did it to give them a place to hide and of course to make it pretty...they had other things in mind.

We got home a bit ago from the movies, all the Gold Breast were sitting out in front of the nest in a row, close to each other. The little female is sitting between the pair and they are preening her. They seem to put her in the middle and fuss over her a lot. She is a bit smaller than the other female. It is really good they are taking her "under their wing" so to speak.

Adorable picture! Where do you all get these adorable species of finches? We don't have that many places to get them in Md. Now I want two Gold Breast. I am like a little kid, every time I see someone with something...I want it too.
