New Kids in the Aviary

I have removed the parrot finches. The young were weaned and beginning to color up so they are seperated and house in flights. I add 3 pair of red headed gouldians. They were paired for breeding in cages earlier this summer but showed no interest, most are just a little over a year to 1.5 years old. All are not related. It will be interesting to see if they stick to the mate that they have been caged with or if they will switch. For now they just don't know what to make with all the room and the water fountain. They are staying clustered together, very interesting flock behavior.

They have added some beautifuls colours to the aviary. I wonder who will answer your singing Romeos advances.

Candace is this the room your parrot finches were breeding in? Is this the same room with the bookshelf wall that has all of the different nests on it?
I can only imagine how lovely it must be for them to be able to select from a series of different nesting sites and have all of this space to roam about

Have they always selected among the nests or do you ever have pairs that seek out really random spots to nest?

They are having fun.
Yes this is the room the parrot finches were breeding in. And also the one with the nest wall and other nest hanging from the wire walls(wood & plastic finch nest boxes) and some gourd type hanging from the trees and coconuts with holes drilled and bamboo wicker nest in the arbor. Many of the nest have smaller openings...for the goldbreast that are going in there. I wonder what these gouldians will pick...they have never been bred before so they are not preconditioned to a certain type nest.
The parrot finch pairs both picked the same type nest. It was a wooden cleenex box holder laid on its side. I guess the oval opening was very appealing. I went to Michaels and bought 2 more to put in. I will add 2 more pair pair to this mix soon. They are the new redhead pairs I bought earlier this summer from the relocating military couple. I figured I would keep it all red in there...due to the aggression and also I know what I am getting from these pairings. This is also the beginning of my own experiment on sex ratio among the normal redhead bunch. I still have some RH set up with OH and BH in cages, both normal backs and yellow backs.. I will still selectively cage breed for the yellow and blue backs, orange heads and lilac breast. I don't want the mix to get too crazy
I think I will take pics of the different nest today and post later. Maybe we can all have a guess as to which they will prefer.
