juvenile gouldian molt

Post by star » Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:30 pm

The two baby gouldians I have are part way molted but I never see any feathers on the cage floor or around it anymore. Could this mean they have stopped and won't finish coloring up until next year? Never had gouldians before.

How old are the chicks? Some moult slower than others and some will not complete until the following year but most moult within the first 6 months.
Increased protein can help through the moult. Feast brand by Bird Care Company makes a great eggfood for moulting birds. Feather Up may help also.

I was told they were born in May and June. I do put a product called feather glow in their drinking water. It's from frisky finches has anyone else used this? They have egg food but I only see one of them eating it. They are always curious and alert checking things out. The one that I believe is female chirps a lot and the dilute sings a lot but they don't fly around that much.

Gouldians vary considerably in the time they take to moult. If yours were born in May and June, they are only 4 and 5 months old, so they are quite young still.
