Re: Newly decorated cage...now I need to just get finches!
Okay...we are on the way back. We got a really nice pair of shaftails and a pair of red cheek cordon bleus.
The RCCB have a deep chestnut brown and a little deeper blue coloring. The male has perfect little red cheeks.
He had fires the blue billed (95 a pair) and black bellied (110) but we went with the RCCB. He had one pair of Strawberries, they were 225 for the pair. Ouch!

Re: Newly decorated cage...now I need to just get finches!
I snuck a few pictures, sorry if they aren't to clear. I didn't want to get to close and scare them. We have only been home for a hour from the show, I think they are still a little unsure of their new home.
The male Shaftail has been singing since we got in the car, he just keeps going. I am in the famliy room and can hear him from the front dining/living room. The female is a little scared and seems stressed. The breeder/birds were on the East coast of Florida at another show yesterday and now on the West coast today. I think they are stressed a bit.
Both pairs are resting. I gave them two different water cups with Vitalize in it, egg food with ground Roudybush, seed, millet and my calcium and mineral mixture of mineral block, cuttlebone, and oyster shell....lobster champagne, the remote to the TV, just kidding!!!! I am going to let them be for the afternoon and rest. I can hear the RCCB chirpping from the other room.
If the pictures look like they are puffed, they are probably just tired. I'll get better pics soon.
By the way, the breeder I deal with had Dybowski Twinspots (unusual), Blue billed and Black Bellied fires, 1 pair of Strawberries, Cut Throats, Zebras and their mutations, Bronze wings mannikins, Weavers, Red faced Stars, Lavendars, RCCB,and Blue Caps, Spice, Diamonds, Green Singing finches, Red Faced Parrot finches (a lot of those), lots of Gold Breasts, St. Helena, silverbills, Society (crested to). He also had Scarlet Chested and Rosey Bourkes.

Those Shaftails look gorgeous in that cage.... I think they're great looking birds, anyway, and I love the Cordons.
Wish I lived closer ...I would have snatched up that pair of Strawberries!
You and hubby DID GOOD, Cindy.

Great choice Cindy. Had I been there I would have bought the Strawberries and the Dybowsky's if indeed they had looked nice.

The Dybowski looked great, the Strawberries (1 pair) looked ok, female was badly plucked on the back of the neck and tail. He said it is his frist pair in a very long time. I did ask about the Chestnut breasted mannikins. He said they are so hard to come by and he hasn't seen them in a long time. His fires were pretty but we both fell in love with the RCCB. The male's colors are very pretty in person under the right lighting.

Re: Newly decorated cage...now I need to just get finches!
I really love my pair of Dybowki's. At first I thought them to be a little dull looking, but now that they are in the aviary and nice and healthy they are stunning birds. They at first were very shy and never came out but now they are all over the place. Very bonded. I HOPE I have a pair. They are hard to sex and they have shown no interest in breeding yet. If not, it's okay. I still enjoy looking at them.

Re: Newly decorated cage...GOT FINCHES TODAY!
Oh, I didn't mention this before but one of the topics posted reminded me that the breeder also had Combassou finches. The male is a black color and looks like a little mini crow. A friend of mine was at the show selling birds told me he was interested in them since they looked like a crow but finch size.
Bird Express has a good picture of them:

Re: Newly decorated cage...GOT FINCHES TODAY!
I told my husband I love decorating cages, I go to Pier 1, the clearance section of their florals and stock up. I have some different orchid stems I could bring with me. Let's do lunch!...I love doing cages up. The one the Shaftails are in was fun to do, I got to saw, drill, use zip ties, create. I was in my glory.
I used to do silk floral arrangements as gifts and for the house. I have an art background.
HMMMM
I told my husband that maybe I should work for Pier 1, I could get silks at a discount!!!! LOL.
He said go for it.

Re: Newly decorated cage...GOT FINCHES TODAY!
Lovely birds! Congrats on the new pairs! I saw a pair of red cheeked cordons about a week ago at petsmart, very beautiful. They were even nesting! Once petsmart put them on sale for 81.00 a piece they were gone. Keep us updated! I wish you the best with them!!

Re: Newly decorated cage...GOT FINCHES TODAY!
I paid $45.00 per bird for the RCCCB and $35 per bird for the Shaftail. Check for shows in your area, the prices might be better.
